Rising Stars: Meet Jason Eksuzian

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Eksuzian.

Hi Jason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I studied directing and photography at Bennington College in Vermont, not too far from where I grew up in Massachusetts. After a summer of working construction and living in a literal surf shack on Martha’s Vineyard, I moved to New York City. In New York, I worked as a lighting technician for off-Broadway theaters, as a production assistant, and as a general “whatever-you-need-I’m-just-happy-to-be-here” guy. Anything to learn, gain experience and keep the rent paid.

A few years later, I found myself in Portland, Oregon, where friends from college and I created and ran a non-profit arts group. It was an incredible experience and I learned an awful lot about the nuts and bolts of producing.

Simultaneously, I was working on commercials in almost every department, trying to find my path in the production world. I always knew I wanted to be behind the camera, shooting and directing, so I studied those positions and worked hard. I’m very grateful to the Portland film community and the many kind and talented folks there for teaching me so much and allowing me so many opportunities.

In 2010, I moved to Los Angeles and by then, I was working primarily as a cinematographer while directing, writing, and producing my own work independently. Twelve years later, I’m still loving my job as a cinematographer and director and I also write, direct, and produce work with my wife under our Twin Flame Films banner.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One big challenge was wanting to be a part of an industry in which I had absolutely zero connections. I really had to work hard to get in the door, but once I did, I had to work even harder to prove my value.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a cinematographer, I’m best known for my work in the unscripted space. I’ve had the pleasure of working on some massive franchises like Vanderpump Rules, The Hills, and The Real Housewives. For that work, I specialize in making real situations and settings as cinematic as possible. I’m always looking for new ways to tell stories visually and set the shows I work on apart from the herd.

As a director and writer, my work has been primarily in comedy. I’m very proud to have had several award-winning projects make the festival rounds at places like Austin Film Festival, Los Angeles Comedy Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, London Comedy Festival, Series Fest, and many more.

I think what sets me apart is my ability to put together a project from root to fruit. I want to see it through from the first kernel of an idea, through production, post, and beyond. You are as likely to see me in the director’s chair as you are wrapping equipment or helping load in craft service. I believe my projects are a team effort through and through and want to work with people who feel the same way.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
When you are first starting out in production, I think it is incredibly important to study and observe. That means constantly reading the room, knowing where you fit into the process, knowing what is expected of you, and being prepared to exceed those expectations.

Relationships are everything. Get out there, meet folks, and when you get the chance to show someone what you can do, be ready!
