Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Jarman.
Hi Janine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
18 years ago, I took over a failed salon in Hollywood three months after I moved to Los Angeles. Aimed to create a fun and welcoming salon environment that services all types and textures to serve our community’s hair needs. Hairroin Salon has been a Hollywood staple for years, and we are so happy to celebrate our new location in Los Filez! Boasting two times the space, parking and gorgeous interiors, we are so happy to be in this new quintessential neighborhood at the crossroads of Hollywood, Silver Lake, and Los Filez.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Owning a small business will always have its fair share of hurdles. More recently, the pandemic was really the deepest challenge on how to operate and navigate in such a fear-inducing time. as well as how to stay afloat with so many closures. And then, when we thought we were almost thru it, we had the riots and had to board up the business, as well as continue to work with boards up, non of which was ideal, or there is a playbook for. Nonetheless, we got thru it. Ultimately, you just put your head down, do your best and take care of your people, be it staff and customers. As soon as we were right side up, our building of 15 years old, and we were challenged to find and build a new location. In November 2022, we opened our doors in one of my favorite Los Angeles neighborhoods, Los Filez. It felt like such a blow to have to move after all we had been thru with the pandemic. But today, I’m so glad my hand was forced, and we have a fresh start in a new neighborhood with twice the space and a new take on the old Hairroin.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Hairroin, we do all things hair. Color, blinding, extension, cuts, and perms. In particular, I specialize in curly cuts and perms. I have a hair product company called Curl Cult that I s launched in 2020 when my salon was closed down. As a result, we do a lot of textured hair and modern perming along with the more traditional services we are known for. Hairroin always strives to be a comfortable place for clients to come and explore whatever hair dreams they have. We have gender-neutral pricing and a warm and welcoming staff.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love that in Los Angeles, you can experience so many cultures on any given day from our sub-city areas like little tokyo and Alveria Street. There is always some sort of culinary adventure you can go on on any given day.
What I don’t love is our public transportation. I wish it was safer and more accessible to everyone so that we could connect the far-reaching corners of our city with greater ease.
