Today we’d like to introduce you to Jampol Taborda.
Hi Jampol, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It was a golden hour on a weekday, and at the time, I had my first slide phone that was shaped kind of like a chocolate bar. I took a picture of the sunset on the horizon, and I immediately fell in love with the photo I had just taken. I thought “Wow, I might actually be really good at this” I was 12 years old.
This birthed a new fascination for image making, I got my first camera on my 14th birthday and from then on, I just kept taking pictures of nature, landscapes, and especially the moon. I realized that this was something I wanted to do long term, I didn’t have the patience to sit down and paint something, I frequently got upset at myself for not making things perfect, photography allowed my creativity, inner critic and attention to detail to be put to good use.
Later on, I got into shooting people, and I was heavily inspired by now controversial show “ANTM” with Tyra Banks. Nigel Barker along with all the talented photographers really inspired me to get more into fashion photography, I just loved the creativity of it all. I decided to go and study at FIT in NYC, where I was able to develop more of my vision and hone my technical skills, lighting is everything! I also met husband Michael, a designer who every now and then photographs for his own label JAFINE, together, we collaborate on several shoots and create art together. I guess you could say were a bit of a power couple.
We now live together and I am photographing more than ever. I started selling some of my prints, been shooting a lot in the city of Toronto, CA. The fashion scene there is up and coming and it feels great to be a part of something that’s growing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not, I think a lot of artists can relate when I say that art is sometimes a struggle. The creative blocks, finding time when to practice your medium, especially if you’re not doing it full time, can be a bit of struggle. It’s a luxury to be able to pursue your passion full-time, and not everyone has the time, money, or energy to push themselves forward.
Luckily art is not something you run out of time for, anyone can be an artist, and as long as you keep doing what you do, whether that’s painting, photographing, dancing, etc, the universe will reward you.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a fashion, and portrait photographer.
I would say that Im mostly known for my portraits and fashion work.
I love shooting my subjects in unique situations that make them bloom. Although my work is usually staged, I love being able to photograph my subjects as if they were candid and caught in the moment. Those moments are fleeting but remembered for ever.
I guess what sets me apart from other photographers is that I treat every image I make as if it were a painting that would hang up in a gallery. I love being able to see an image I took years later, and still feel the liveliness of it. I think that’s what makes a good work of art.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
