Today we’d like to introduce you to James Jones
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I draw significant inspiration from renowned directors such as Spike Lee, Ernest Dickerson, John Singleton, Julie Dash, and Melvin Van Peebles. My admiration for these filmmakers has profoundly influenced my storytelling approach and cinematic style.
My work reflects a commitment to narratives that resonate with audiences on multiple levels, much like the films of my inspirations. My dedication to crafting stories that educate, entertain, and inspire is evident in my projects.
My cinematic journey began in 2007 with video editing, igniting my passion for visual storytelling—particularly stories that highlight people of color and their untold histories. In 2014, I collaborated with an Atlanta-based organization as their media specialist, capturing and editing videos that were later showcased before an audience of 20,000 at the Philips Arena for the Neighborhood Awards, hosted by Steve Harvey. My gifts gained further recognition when I was commissioned to create a Lifetime Achievement video for the legendary Cissy Houston and her family, which was presented at the 2015 Gospel Image Awards.
I was determined to elevate my craft, I ventured into cinematography in 2017, starting with a Samsung phone to record videos and music projects. Believing that mastering techniques with minimal equipment would strengthen his skills, I remained persistent in acquiring professional-grade gear. This dedication led me to create a groundbreaking music video in 2018, addressing overlooked aspects of American history—particularly in my home state of North Carolina. The impact of this project inspired me to expand it into a full-length feature film, Freedom of North Carolina.
I was faced with challenges in finding cinematographers with no budget who aligned with my vision, I embraced the realization that I would write, film, and edit the project myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge I face in filmmaking is my location in a less populated, resource-limited Tier 1 community. Consequently, networking with other filmmakers and traveling is essential for my professional growth. Funding is another huge hurdle for independent filmmakers like me!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m visionary first. Writer, Director, Cinematographer, and editor of 18 years.
I am known for my first feature film “Freedom of North Carolina” (2021): This film, set in the 19th century, documents a enslave family’s escape from a plantation in eastern North Carolina. It debuted on June 18, 2021, and won Best Feature Film at The International Gullah Film Festival in April 2022.
Freedom of North Carolina premiered in select theaters in October 2021, ultimately gaining the attention of Entertainment Studios, founded by Byron Allen in Los Angeles, leading to its U.S. domestic and international distribution. The film earned recognition at four film festivals.
“Paydert” (2024): Released in August 2024, this feature film explores the experiences of the Nobles family as they relocate to North Carolina and encounter inexplicable occurrences in a former plantation. The film secured licensing deals with theater chains, was screened at community colleges and special events, and became an official selection at festivals such as the Raleigh Film & Art Festival and the Prince George’s Film Festival and won Best Filmmaker Award 2024 at the Pecan Picklin Film Festival.
In February 2025, I completed my first short film, titled “The Hero: Keys vs Carolina Coach,” a project that involved several hours of writing, a month of casting and location scouting, and two days of filming. The film has gained much attention from the glimpse of Sarah Key Evans a story before Rosa Parks an iconic trailblazer refused to give up her seat on the bus, which led to a landmark ruling by the Interstate Commerce Commission that prohibited segregation under the Interstate Commerce Act.
I take pride in my ability to tell extraordinary stories from diverse perspectives, combining black stories with a cinematic touch.
What sets me apart is my dedication to uncovering untold narratives and presenting them with authenticity and depth sets me apart in the filmmaking community.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
