Rising Stars: Meet Hyra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyra.

Hi Hyra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my journey in music back when I was in college. I also think it’s safe to say that I’ve been making music or singing since I was a child. I remember it clear as day, it was spring break in Miami and a friend of mine at the time had a cool beat he was making. He had just gotten into production. After some convincing, I decided to sing one of my scribbles as a top line for the song. I instantly became obsessed with making music and creating a character in a world through my songs. I lived in New York for some time, so I was heavily influenced by the techno and electronic music scene. I’ve also been a huge pop music fan forever, so it was only a matter of time before I put the two together to create the sound you hear now. However, I can’t take all of the credit for the sonic experience of Hyra. I work very closely with my dear friend and collaborator, Mads Mason.

Fast forward to sometime in April of 2022, I finally decided to tease a song while I was at a music festival. Didn’t think much of it. Just posted one of my sounds to see what people thought. When I got back to my phone, actually in the middle of the Doja Cat set, I was so thrilled to find out it had a small viral moment. That’s the story of REM. The release of that song has been so wonderful. I’ve had the opportunity to get really close with some really great friends and awesome artists because of it. I’m so excited to share more.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I’d say pursuing a music career, especially a pop music career, is not for the weak of the mind. There are a lot of trials and tribulations that come with the gig. Like, imagine being vulnerable online: your life, work, vision, and artistic expression, hoping someone connects with it. Thankfully I’ve had great luck in finding people who are like-minded that enjoy my sound.

I think it’s also important to mention that sometimes your artistic vision isn’t necessarily all that clear. At least for me, I’ve had to figure it out. These things take time so there’s gonna be a lot of trial and error, and iterations of songs and visual ideas to make sure you’re really putting yourself out there in the best way possible. A way that reflects who you are as an artist clearly. It’s a constant work in progress but I’m really happy with where I’ve gotten so far and maybe I’m a masochist because the process is everything.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Hi, my name is HYRA. I am a musician and filmmaker. I make electronic-influenced pop music, sometimes categorized as hyper pop. Though I don’t think that’s necessarily 100% accurate. You can find influences of R&B and other genres in my work as well. I’m really interested in taking my listeners into a cinematic and visual experience to accompany the sounds they’re hearing. My hope is to create a whole universe within my project. I think that’s as simple as I can put it.

I’m most proud of how much I’ve forced myself to get out of my comfort zone. Of the small goals and big goals, I’ve achieved. Like leaving MIA, NY, and SF to end up in LA for the purpose of music. For doing things even when I’m scared. Like getting on stage in front of hundreds of strangers and being my most maximized self. For believing in myself even though we all know that the ultimate goal is a hard one to achieve. I’m proud of my dedication and perseverance. And of course, just having fun throughout.

What matters most to you? Why?
I want to make a lasting impact with my project. I want to shape people’s minds and change how they see the world on a day-to-day basis. I want to take regular life experiences and hopefully be the soundtrack to some amazing or maybe not-so-great moments in people’s life. A memory you hold close.

I want to be the binding factor between a whole bunch of strangers – this common source that can make us all feel together as one. So the short answer would be that I care about fostering a community. I care about storytelling, I care about art, pop, music, and longevity.
