Rising Stars: Meet Hyo Kim of Los Feliz hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hyo Kim

Hi Hyo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi My name is Hyowon (Hyo) Kim. Growing up in Seoul, Korea, I developed a love for cinema early, shaping my understanding of storytelling through visual language. Like many in my generation who came of age before the advent of cell phones and social media, I discovered my world through cinema and literature. Naturally, film and photography became my conduits for expression and exploration.

After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film, Video, New Media, and Animation, I worked as a freelance photographer and filmmaker. My projects included music videos, fashion shorts, documentaries, and films that have been published and exhibited commercially and internationally at film festivals, as well as at the Seoul Museum of Art.

Returning to Seoul after graduation during the COVID-19 pandemic, I ventured into the music industry, producing visual campaigns for K-pop musicians, including over 20 projects for BTS. I later served as a creative on the debut project for a new group.

While this work was exhilarating, I realized my true passion lay in narrative filmmaking. Now, as a first-year directing fellow at the American Film Institute, I am embracing a transformative journey of self-discovery and artistic growth—a path I am deeply committed to continuing as a filmmaker.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me as a person and deeply influenced the work I create.

Transitioning from the fast-paced world of K-pop visual production to narrative filmmaking was daunting, requiring me to step away from a comfortable and successful career path. Like many, I faced uncertainty and introspection, questioning what I truly wanted from my work. The shift to narrative filmmaking wasn’t easy—I had to rebuild and redefine my creative identity.

Now, as a directing fellow, I’ve encountered new challenges: adapting to an intense and highly collaborative environment, learning to trust my instincts while embracing constructive feedback, and continuously pushing myself to grow as an artist. Yet, these struggles have proven invaluable, helping me develop resilience and a clearer sense of purpose in my journey as a filmmaker.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work reflects a lifelong passion for storytelling, driven by a deep curiosity about human relationships and the complexities of life. I specialize in screenwriting and directing, crafting narratives that provoke questions and explore universal themes of humanity and life.

What sets me apart is my ability to draw from diverse influences, blending a background in experimental filmmaking, photography, and digital media with a global perspective. I am interested in directing films that explores the paradoxes of human nature while crafting visually striking worlds.

What makes you happy?
I find joy in the process of crafting something meaningful, whether it’s a film, a photograph, or even a concept that sparks curiosity and dialogue. Seeing an idea come to life, from its inception to the final result, fills me with a sense of purpose.

I’m also happiest when I’m connecting with people—listening to their stories, exploring different perspectives, or collaborating on a shared vision. It’s in these moments of human connection that I find inspiration for my work and a deeper understanding of the world.

Lastly, I find happiness in the small, quiet moments—watching a film that stirs emotions, reading a book that sparks new ideas, or even just sitting with a cup of tea, letting my mind wander. These moments remind me why I create: to capture the beauty, complexity, and simplicity of life.
