Today we’d like to introduce you to Heidi Cortez.
Hi Heidi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out selling door-to-door as a child. I grew up without much money, so to me I was excited to work and earn my own way.
I worked through my childhood and when I was in my early 20’s I built a tanning salon. On slow days and times at the salon, I would work on my social media (MySpace). I saw an opportunity there for networking and marketing.
I utilized social media to expand my brand, book myself jobs, and connect with other entrepreneurs I wouldn’t normally have access to….
I also spent a lot of time hand-writing letters to network with people in authoritative positions.
With the money I was making I was able to invest in myself, which got to me where I am now. Now, I get to help others do the same.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Ask any entrepreneur, and they will say they have had many ups & downs.
My biggest struggle, like most entrepreneurs, was capital in the beginning. If I knew what I know now or would have had a mentor in my late teens and early 20s, it would have been a lot smoother!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a lifelong entrepreneur and 1:1 business coach.
I’ve been in branding, social media, and PR for over 20yrs.
I help entrepreneurs and businesses build more credibility so they can have a stronger authority in their niche. Some of the areas I help with are press in publications, building social media presence, brand development & growth, podcast interviews, collabs with influencers, online courses, Wikipedia pages, and so much more. I help build the “back end” of a brand to become more publicly recognized.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a kid, I was curious, hardworking, and a big daydreamer. My favorite “subjects” were lunch and recess so I could socialize (network? haha).
I grew up in a very loving family with just my mom and two siblings. I’m the middle child, so no one cared what I did. I’m kidding. They did care, but it didn’t stop me from being gone for hours at a time riding my bike. I was definitely the only 13-year-old I knew of that had a pager.
