Haozhe Li

Hi Haozhe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Once upon a time, my journey as an artist began with the influence of my mother, who was an art teacher. As a child, I would sit by her side, mesmerized by her skillful drawings and paintings. Those moments sparked a deep love for art within me. When I entered university, I made the decision to pursue art design as my major. It was an expansive field of study, covering a wide range of artistic disciplines. However, it was during an illustration course that I felt a profound connection. The act of bringing stories to life through lines and colors ignited a fire within me.

Driven by my newfound passion, I made up my mind to continue studying illustration at a postgraduate level. I yearned to delve deeper into this captivating art form to acquire new knowledge, techniques, and guidance that would nurture my talent. Filled with gratitude and excitement, I embarked on this next chapter of my artistic journey. Surrounded by like-minded individuals and guided by experienced mentors, I immersed myself in honing my skills, exploring innovative techniques, and developing my artistic voice.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
On the road of learning illustration, it hasn’t always been a smooth journey. One of the main struggles I faced was the desire to develop my own illustration language and style. Initially, I found myself confused and uncertain about my artistic voice. It seemed like I hadn’t yet formed a distinct language that truly represented who I was as an artist.

To overcome this challenge, I embarked on a path of continuous practice and exploration. I dedicated myself to honing my skills and experimenting with different painting materials. I delved into watercolors, optimized oil painting techniques, and even explored digital mediums. Through these trials and exercises, I gradually began to find my own painting language and discovered my favorite tool— pastel.

While my illustration style may still be evolving and may not be entirely mature, I have found a direction that resonates with me deeply. The journey of self-discovery and artistic development is an ongoing process, and I am committed to refining my skills and pushing the boundaries of my chosen medium.

It is through these struggles and the determination to overcome them that I have grown as an artist. Each obstacle has served as a valuable lesson, teaching me perseverance and pushing me to seek new possibilities. The challenges I faced along the way have shaped me, fueling my passion and motivating me to continue exploring and evolving my illustration style.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently working as an illustrator, specializing in pastel drawings. My illustrations are characterized by a unique blend of figurative and abstract elements, creating a harmonious and serene atmosphere within the artwork.

What sets me apart from others is the distinct use of pastels as my primary medium. Pastels offer a softness and richness of color that brings a unique visual quality to my illustrations. The medium allows me to capture delicate nuances and create a sense of depth and texture in my artwork.

Additionally, my illustrations often combine elements of both figurative and abstract styles. This fusion allows me to convey emotions and narratives in a way that transcends literal representation. By blending recognizable forms with more abstract elements, I invite viewers to engage with the artwork on a deeper, introspective level.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I have a few pieces of advice for those who are just starting out. One crucial aspect is to immerse yourself in art history. Take the time to learn about the works of previous artists and explore various artistic movements. By studying art history, you can gain insights into how different artists have developed their unique styles and discovered their own artistic languages. This exposure can provide a wealth of inspiration and help you shape your own artistic journey.

A valuable way to delve into art history is by watching documentaries and visiting art museums. Documentaries offer a glimpse into the lives and creative processes of renowned artists, while art museums provide an opportunity to experience art firsthand. By observing and analyzing artworks, you can develop a deeper understanding of techniques, composition, and storytelling.

In addition to studying art history, the key to growth lies in practice and dedication. Draw as much as you can and practice different techniques and mediums. Embrace experimentation and allow yourself to make mistakes. Remember, every stroke and every creation contributes to your artistic development. Don’t be discouraged by initial difficulties or setbacks; instead, view them as opportunities to learn and improve.

Seek feedback and guidance from experienced artists or mentors who can provide constructive criticism and valuable insights. Participate in art communities, both online and offline, to connect with fellow artists and gain inspiration from their journeys.

Lastly, believe in yourself and trust your artistic instincts. Your unique perspective and voice are what will set your work apart. Embrace your individuality and let it shine through your art.
