Today we’d like to introduce you to Girl Named Nino.
Nino, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My musical journey began in childhood in Tbilisi, Georgia, and evolved in Chicago, where I immersed myself in a diverse range of music, from jazz and classical to indie rock and electronic. Inspired by artists like Billie Holiday, Radiohead, Tom Waits and Bjork, I started experimenting with songwriting and production and in my early 20s started getting involved in various music projects learning what it took to be an impactful songwriter, a captivating performer and an effective bandleader.
I continued to hone my skills at DePaul University’s School of Music as a Classical Voice Major and in 2018 established Moonlight Daughter Records to support my artistic vision as I continued to revolve as an independent artist. In 2022, I joined the UCLAex Music Business and Entertainment Studies Programs and was recently invited into the first cohort of the UC Excelerator program, gaining valuable insights into the music industry and music entrepreneurship.
I’m passionate about creating music that challenges conventions and evokes emotion while reflecting the times. My goal is to continue pushing boundaries and sharing my unique perspective with the world.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve often encountered unique challenges navigating the music industry but it has only made me grow stronger in my dedication to the craft. From gender bias to systemic inequities, these obstacles have at times tested my resilience but they’ve also fueled my determination and conviction of what I have to say as an artist.
My dream has always been to create music that parks a connection; music that emboldens and inspires people. This mindset has lately brought me to the fascinating world of sound mixing and specifically spacial audio.
Beyond industry challenges, the universal experience of being an immigrant has shaped my perspective and inspired me develop a singular voice that speaks to all facets of human experience. The process of adapting to a new culture and language, and becoming a musician with little to no guidance in the early stages has proven to be a rich source of material for my music and now informs the way I navigate running my own label, producing other people, music directing, and being a voting member of the Recording Academy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a multi-disciplinary artist, blending songwriting, production, and composition to create immersive sonic experiences. My music is a fusion of introspection and groove, exploring themes of identity, love, loss, and the human condition.
I’m particularly passionate about integrating spatial audio and its ability to transport listeners to new dimensions. By leveraging this technology, I aim to create truly immersive listening experiences that blur the lines between music and reality.
What sets me apart is my unique blend of classical training, avant-garde influences with a cinematic backbone. This fusion allows me to create music that is both accessible and challenging, inviting listeners to delve deeper into the sonic landscape.
I’m currently focused on exploring the possibilities of spatial audio and creating innovative listening experiences. My goal is to push the boundaries of music and create work that resonates with audiences on a deep emotional level.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned to trust my timing and continue to stay deeply connected to my intuition.
