Rising Stars: Meet Gary Grossman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Grossman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My career began in New York, owning two dinner theaters and a theatrical lighting company by the age of 23. I worked at the Public Theatre, Café La Mama, and Sheraton Square Playhouse before moving to LA and joining Los Angeles’ emerging theatre movement in the 70’s.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is nothing smooth about producing theatre. Especially theatre in Los Angeles. And because we are producing exclusively original work it adds to the struggles. Every play is different and you have basically start from scratch on every production.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hands on producer. I was trained that way from and early age. I pretty much have been involved with every aspect of producing. I’ve been an actor, a designer, a technician, director and playwright. I think my skill sets in all areas provide me with a valuable way to talk to directors, actors, designers and technicians in the language they understand.

How do you think about happiness?
I put out a call for action and got artistic directors from 64 theatres to get together every Tuesday to talk as a community about Los Angeles Intimate Theatre.
