Rising Stars: Meet Garrett Gloom of Midcity

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Gloom.

Hi Garrett, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from Asheville, North Carolina. I moved out to LA almost four years ago now…. can’t believe it’s been that long. I moved with a group of friends once I had kinda set my sights on the music thing, even though my stuff was extremely far below par. I knew LA was in the plans. I played in a cover band when I was like 12, that was my first and only real taste of performing and being a frontman. We played Strokes and Killers covers it was fun. I started recording around 18 but it took a few years to find my sound. I’m just now after four years of feeling like I belong here, had to find my group.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely hasn’t been easy. For those who haven’t been to LA, it’s EXPENSIVE. It’s a hard place to be creative sometimes when you’re so busy just trying to stay alive. Also, I don’t know if you heard but the industry fucking sucks… everybody and their cousin has a Soundcloud link these days. Another thing with being an artist that folks don’t speak on enough is how it affects relationships and friendships. It’s hard to fall in love with what you create, even harder when you have so many other things that need love. Two years ago, I lost one of my best friends. He passed on Christmas. Shit sucks. The saddest part of it all is that he was also truly one of the best recording artists to ever live in my opinion, and a lot of people would agree with me. Everyone reading goes listen to Cloudy Nueve. Legend!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do a bit of everything these days. I started off just writing little verses and then eventually recording them, then got into learning how to actually track myself with a decent mix which ultimately lead to me producing the songs themselves. I’d say I’m known for being a singer but I also just don’t think most people know I produce and mix mostly all of it as well. I kinda can’t work any other way now. My friends and I started a collective this year called NO FUN! We’re a group of individual artists who honestly wouldn’t normally mesh but it’s divine. I’m most proud of them, and also the videos. My good friend Zoodeville (Rapper, Videographer, Human) and I shot seven music videos this year corresponding with the singles I dropped. I write up all the treatments and stupid little storylines for whatever I see for the song then bring that to him and he makes it all possible to capture then edits it all as well. I’m proud of what we made happen with little to no budget at all. Go watch that shit!

Any big plans?
This year I’ll be releasing my first project. My first real collection of work. I would say more but hopefully y’all will have been so intrigued by this lovely write-up that you tune in and see for yourselves. A lot more films in the future as well, I’m currently writing the screenplay for a series and after that a full-length movie. But no huge changes I’m just gonna keep being me I think it’s all we can really do.
