Rising Stars: Meet Farzad Refahi of Los Angeles Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Farzad Refahi

Hi Farzad, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and growth in Tehran, capital of Iran and I began my way in my country, I made my beginners short films when I was 16-17 years old, then, after military service, I started my career in movie and TV industries as 2nd and 1st assistant director, script supervisor, set line producer, production manager and producer and at the same time I made some TV commercials and worked as professional photographer too.

Finally I had to move to Turkey as refuge on 2011 and after done my UN process in 2013, I migrated to the US; my first city was Chicago, IL, the city that I went to college for first time in the US.

A couple months later, I found an opportunity for working in my main career, as director and producer in California, so I moved here, Los Angeles, and settled done here.

I done my first project, but after that, I understood it was not enough for working as professional here, so I went to “Video Production” short term course, nine months, in the occupational center in the Valley, LA (WVOC); I passed the courses, it was great and I learned a lot things there but again, I preferred learn more, so I went to the Los Angeles Film School in Hollywood in 2016 and after three years and some months more, in December 2019, am graduate and having earned a Bachelor of Science in “Film Production – Cinematography”. When I was student, around 2017-2018, I could find more connections with some event planners and models, so I began my career as Video/Photographer in Fashion industries too. The film school was a wonderful experience to me and I learned a lot there and it was so helpful for increasing knowledge, connections and opportunities.

By the way, thanks God, I am OK now and I try to find new ways, new opportunities and new challenges every day and I believe each day will be better than other day when we work hard and harder.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! When I migrated to the US, I was not so young, I was around 42-43 and with a lot of issues like new language, financial issues, being unfamiliarity with all situations and culture, etc. but I tried to my best for passing everything; it was an huge challenge to me and for sure, it will be a big challenge for everybody, when they migrate and move to a new country, but it is an amazing experience and I am so thankful of the United States always because it has made a lot opportunities to me that I was deprived of them in my country.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I am sure that I will have more opportunities, more famous and bigger clients, I believe the business will be better and better day by day and year by year; when I run my career on 2014 in the US, everything was so hard and I started with minimal features but now I have many clients and enough equipment for small and medium projects.
