Rising Stars: Meet Eva Kmetko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Kmetko.

Hi Eva, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey started many, many years ago. I borrowed my father’s old manual Minolta camera here and there, I would go out and take pictures of anything that was that moment extraordinary, unusual or simply beautiful in my eyes. A lot has changed since then to be honest :)). Today’s world of photography and design is pretty much digital. The demand is high, work results are almost instant. I started to work professionally in this field over 10 years ago and added graphic design just before the pandemic. I worked in various jobs across the world thru my life. I think thanks to the experience, timing and my strong head I’m here, doing what I love and what I do the best.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was everything, but not smooth :))). The road was bumpy, especially in my younger years. I had no support. Literally zero support. My family wanted me to pursuit a different career. My friends thought my interests are temporary because their interests were temporary. It was a lonely journey. Very lonely until I met my husband. He saw something in me no one else could see. It took me a while to take him seriously. He was, well he is kind of a unicorn with his opinions. But from that moment it wasn’t a lonely journey anymore. We are the dream team together, the yin yang, the peas and carrots, we are totally opposite but interconnected.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I had a conversation with one of my friends the other day and she asked me, what keeps me creative?. And I thought well, it’s definitely not the crowd. A thing happened to me some time ago. I picked up my phone and I found out that my Facebook account was hacked. I tried to log on and I couldn’t. So I tried to log in to Instagram. Blocked. I tried Messenger. Blocked. My personal and professional accounts were connected and all were disabled. I kinda freaked out cause all my connections, thousands of them were in someone else’s hands … I had my Facebook account since 2009. All the images, posts, messages, memories were lost in a second. I tried to recover the accounts with Meta, but it was waste of time. So I was without a social media for some time. And let me tell you, it was so refreshing! First of all, I had more time on my hands cause I didn’t spend so much time on the phone. But mostly I didn’t see what the others are doing, And that was it! I didn’t care what the competition is doing, I didn’t see what’s in, what is amusing the crowds, I did my own thing. I focused on my set of skills fully.

I even started a new YouTube Chanel called TRAIA to practice my cinematic and artistic interests. I never thought about myself as a vlogger, but when the situation changes, we change too. Eva Kmetko Photography is still growing. What sets us apart? Everything. We all have our own set of skills, our unique experiences, our internal power, will. We are all walking our own paths. I’m proud of my strength. There were many many occasions in my life when I could stop walking. But I didn’t. I kept going forward no matter what. And let me tell you there were situations that would give you goosebumps, like when I got into a situation with Ukraine mafia in Switzerland. But that’s for another time …

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Do not compete with others. Only compete with yourself. Self-improvement in all aspects of life is the key to success.
