Rising Stars: Meet Eva Chan of Savannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Chan

Hi Eva, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for art began in elementary school, where I would visit an art studio twice a week to learn drawing. Early on, I loved creating realistic landscapes and portraits. This passion for capturing the world eventually led me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Film and Television in Taiwan. In college, I shifted my focus to using the camera as a tool to blend the talents of actors, locations, sounds, and stories, creating immersive and realistic films.

After graduating, I realized there was still room to grow and discovered that visual effects could unlock even greater creative possibilities for film. This realization inspired me to move to the U.S. to pursue a master’s degree in visual effects. Today, as a CG Generalist and FX Artist, I specialize in Houdini, lighting, and CG integration. My goal is to merge cinematography with cutting-edge CGI, transforming imaginative concepts into reality.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey, one of the biggest challenges has been dealing with self-doubt. With so many talented artists out there, I often question whether I’m good enough or if art is truly my path. It’s hard not to compare myself to others in the industry, but I’m learning to shift my mindset. Instead of competing, I focus on enjoying the process and learning from others to enhance my own skills.

Another challenge is keeping up with the ever-evolving world of visual effects, where technology grows at a rapid pace. It’s not easy to push myself constantly, but I remind myself that staying current with new techniques and tools is essential. Continuous learning and practice are key to staying ahead in this dynamic field.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in FX, CG Integration, and Lighting. Before pursuing my master’s degree, I spent three years as a producer for film and commercials, working with brands like ASUS, Lay’s, and League of Legends, as well as on short films and music videos. Now, in my master’s program, I’m diving deeper into FX, focusing on particle effects, RBD (rigid body dynamics), lighting, and CG integration.

I’m also collaborating with film crews to expand my experience and grow in this field. One of my strengths is troubleshooting and adapting quickly, as well as strong communication skills—qualities I believe are essential in this industry.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I consider myself a big risk-taker. My first major in college was Finance and Banking, but I quickly realized it wasn’t what I was passionate about. I made the decision to take a transfer exam, which led me to one of the top three film programs in Taiwan. Later, when I was studying film for my master’s degree, I discovered visual effects and realized its immense potential to enhance the realism in film. I decided to switch majors after just two film classes, and I’ve never regretted any of these decisions. Taking risks has allowed me to pursue what truly excites me.
