Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Vauxdevil.
Hi Emma, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out my performance art career as a gogo dancer and went on from there. I would do LED, fire, and aerial sets in night clubs and it was fun when I was a teen with that kind of weekly energy. I eventually wanted a bit more of a spotlight, and better fancy costumes, so I went for burlesque. I had always adored classic Vegas showgirls and magician’s assistants, so it came quite naturally. Before the discovery of entertainment, and how I could do it myself, I didn’t have much going on or to be drive for. I feel my progression of my career has been a very lucky streak of “in the right place, in the right time” with the help of my love of DIY.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been an uphill because I’m always pushing myself. I absolutely adore what I do, so it’s never been considered a struggle. Getting through challenges feels like figuring out a really satisfying puzzle, again due to how much I love what I do. Pushing myself is something that really gives me dopamine so….yes, I do struggle but I guess I like it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a burlesque dancer! I add a bit of sideshow to my performances, and I definitely always lean to classic and glam. I sword swallow and do fire eating. 🙂 I also put my costumes together and do the rhinestoning. (I avoid the sewing part most of the time.) I am definitely a prop person, I love my feather boas, bullwhips, lasso, feather fans, etc.
I also have a giant martini show that I do, usually around Halloween, and usually a little bloody 😉
I’m originally from Houston, and I produce a show out there called Cobweb Cabaret. It originally started as a Halloween burlesque show, but still very classic and glam. Now it’s evolved to glam burlesque with an edge or just spooky adjacent. As you can probably tell, I love Halloween. I would love to bring Cobweb or have another production of mine out here in Los Angeles.
I’m proud of my work ethic. Though it can be a downfall to parts of my life, I’m so motivated to keep growing my art. It’s exciting, I have this one lifetime to go as big as I can. I want to do it all 🙂 Hmmm what sets me apart, well I’m quite tall….I’m 6 foot but I dunno. Sword swallowing and burlesque is somewhat unique too. (Tho I’m not the only one! 🖤)
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Learning new things! I’ve learned some trick roping this past year and it’s so satisfying. I love seeing growth in skills, where your hard work is clear in your face and undeniable.
Simple answers: Video games, jellycats (amusables), Tex Mex queso, a boy named Kai, rhinestones. vintage clothes, green juice, a book that keeps my attention.
