Rising Stars: Meet Emily Boss of West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Boss

Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Mime club… embarrassing as it sounds, I was obsessed with Charlie Chaplin, Marcel Marceau, and Lucille Ball from a young age. There was something about conveying laughter with just the power of making faces that I loved, and it came naturally for an “odd” artistic kid. I knew early on the “healing” power of laughter.

I moved from my hometown Las Vegas to Los Angeles to pursue acting in my early 20’s and quickly learned being a girl pursuing improv and comedy came with its own stipulations when it came to be taken seriously as an actress. From playing the “Drunk Comedy Girl,” on a Comedy Central show, to “Funny Drunk Girl 3” for a Feature, it started to become clear I would have to diversify.

Before becoming too discouraged, I started assisting for one of the music industry’s most prolific producers at the time, then segwayed to producing in syndicated television at the beginning of social and digital media because I had a tendency to find the funny even if it was a home improvement show.

After being grossed out for the millionth time by predatory casting calls, movie producers wanting to pursue my pilots for let’s call it a “transactional exchange” or having a major comedy actor at the time offer me roles if I watched them masturbate on FaceTime, I decided it might be time to take a break and go back to Las Vegas.

In this transition, I found myself working in the dark side of Las Vegas nightlife between driving back to Los Angeles for auditions. This is where I feel I truly found my grit. I was working in a world where I had to sell something that people didn’t need, but wanted- a moment of entertainment- Just like Hollywood. Interestingly enough the “Yes, And?” quality I had learned from Groundlings and UCB improv was greatly utilized in this moment. I now had grit… no one could mess with me, and with this confidence I started to be asked to produce podcasts, television shows, and media for up and coming television talent. After watching my work make others successful, I quickly lost any sense of imposter syndrome and adopted the invincible delusion you need to make it in creative spaces.

So where am I today? With producing a Netflix show under my belt, and having the occasional female headhunter tell me during an interview that “My boobs were too big to be taken seriously by industry talent to produce their projects”- this actually happened; I leaned into my social media based on the no nonsense comedic satirical characters I play, and poof a little traction. I’m now touring my one woman pop star character Em Boss in my “Why Am I Working” tour, a satirical reflection of most millennial women who have been through the ringer and lived to tell the tale. With a full comedic EP on the way to Spotify and YouTube, I’m now approaching comedy on my own terms- as the relatable woman who isn’t afraid to tell how it really is.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in comedic characters from Liza Minnelli, to Taylor Swift, to my original no nonsense southern feminist which my followers have kindly named Jolene . Currently I am touring my live one woman satirical washed-up pop star character, Em Boss and her upcoming EP “Wait… What?” I’ve developed a webseries on Youtube based on the character showing the behind the scenes of what working with Em Boss and her “Iconic and Legendary” talent is actually like.

How do you think about luck?
It’s all about luck in the sense that if you’re ready when the networking and timing pays off. I’m from Vegas so I think I live life knowing that it’s a game of chance and nothing is guaranteed.
