Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellissa Catherine
Hi Ellissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My Artistic Journey: From Italy to LA
“ART showed me love when I was blind,
In every shade and form defined.
It challenged me, pushed me to see,
Beyond the limits set by me.
When you lost the way to give and share,
ART was there, a breath of air.
Now ART transforms, just as I did,
Into whatever I choose to be.”
A decade ago, my journey began with a transformative experience at the American Institute of Richmond in Florence, Italy, where I immersed myself in the world of art and culture. This pivotal moment ignited a passion that would guide my path forward. Building on that foundation, I pursued a double major in Fine Art and Marketing Communications in Honolulu, Hawaii, blending creative expression with strategic insight.
Today, based in Los Angeles, I channel my artistic vision into works that reflect both my personal journey and the universal quest for meaning. The loss of my father during the COVID-19 pandemic profoundly influenced my perspective, reminding me of the importance of finding light amidst the shadows. Through my art, I aspire to convey the clarity and illumination I have discovered, hoping to inspire others along the way. Each piece I create serves as a testament to resilience and transformation, capturing the beauty in both struggle and healing.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
From Aloha to Art: An Island Girl’s Journey to LA
Leaving the lush, sun-soaked shores of Hawaii for the bustling streets of Los Angeles was more than just a change of scenery; it was a cultural upheaval. Growing up in a close-knit ‘ohana, the mantra of “live aloha” shaped my identity, instilling values of love, community, and authenticity. But as I traded the soothing sound of waves for the constant hum of city life, I encountered a culture shock that tested those very lessons.
After six years as a marketing agent, I took the plunge to pursue my passion for art, a dream I had long tucked away as a hobby. Quitting my job meant relinquishing my main income, a terrifying but necessary step toward a life that felt genuinely mine. My friends back home were supportive, but I often received messages like, “So, see you in two months?” as they tried to gauge how long I’d last in the fast-paced LA scene. Those lighthearted comments stung, echoing my own doubts.
In Hawaii, everything was familiar; I knew how to navigate the comforting embrace of my island home. But here, every day brought new challenges. I faced countless breakdowns—moments of panic when I questioned my decision, doubting whether I could truly make a living from my art. The fast pace of LA, with its cacophony of voices and endless opportunities, was exhilarating and overwhelming.
What keeps me going is attending other art shows, immersing myself in the creative pulse of the city. Each exhibit offers me a chance to differentiate myself from the oversaturation of the art world. I see countless artists sharing their truths, but I know I bring a unique perspective shaped by my island upbringing. My experiences and struggles are woven into every piece I create, reflecting the tumultuous emotions of leaving behind what I once knew.
The best piece of advice I received was from my fellow half-Korean friend, Kamarco Williams, who instilled a vital balance in my journey. He said, “Networking is overrated. The pace you set is what makes the journey worthwhile.” Those words resonated deeply with me. In a city that often feels like a relentless race, it was a reminder to slow down, savor my process, and focus on my growth rather than getting caught up in comparisons.
I’ve always believed that brutal honesty is the cornerstone of real relationships, a lesson instilled by my family. They see right through the masks we wear. This transparency has been a guiding force in my art, allowing me to explore my identity openly. My upcoming collection will delve into the beauty that emerges from struggle and transformation, serving as both a homage to my roots and a declaration of my new path.
As I dive deeper into this vibrant yet daunting city, I remind myself that my voice is invaluable. I have stories to tell and a unique lens through which to view the world. While I miss the gentle rhythm of island life, I am forging a new one where art isn’t just a pastime—it’s a career that challenges me to grow and express my true self.
The road hasn’t been easy, but each breakdown has pushed me to rise stronger. The vibrant colors and raw emotions of my next collection will reflect not only my journey but also the collective experiences of those who dare to step out of their comfort zones. In this vast city of dreams, I am learning to carve out my own space—one where my art and my true self can thrive, proving that my voice truly has a place at the table.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My Artistic Practice
In my work, I embrace a diverse range of mediums, allowing my creativity to flow without restriction. While I’m not tied to just one type, I am currently exploring the dynamic combination of acrylics, screen printing, and my own custom stencils for spray paint additions. This versatility enables me to express complex emotions and narratives in unique ways.
What supplements my art is my ability to customize familiar faces and iconic figures, adding a personal touch to my creations. Recently, I’ve delved into works featuring legends like Kobe Bryant and Al Pacino. These pieces celebrate their impactful legacies while inviting viewers to connect with the emotions and stories behind these recognizable figures. By infusing my own style into these portraits, I aim to capture the essence of their personas and weave in my own narrative.
My upcoming collection, titled “CIGS,” delves into the intricate stages of anger, depression, and the brighter side of life. Through intentional placement and detailed brushstrokes, I aim to convey the rawness of these experiences. Each piece serves as a visual journey, encouraging reflection on personal emotions and struggles.
What I’m known for is blending vibrant colors with profound themes, creating art that resonates on multiple levels. My goal is not just to share my story but to inspire others to confront their own feelings, fostering a dialogue about the complexities of the human experience. Through customization and emotional depth, I strive to bridge the gap between celebrity and everyday life, reminding us of the shared emotions that unite us all.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something Surprising About Me
Something surprising that most people who know me or my work might not realize is that I have a lot to say. Growing up in a Korean-Native Hawaiian household, I often felt the weight of unspoken secrets and a sense of displacement that came from a lack of belonging. In many Asian households, there’s an expectation to adhere to certain norms, to keep feelings tucked away, and to maintain a facade of perfection.
However, I intend to break through these boundaries. My art is a reflection of that desire—to speak out and encourage others to embrace their own stories. I want to let people know they are not alone in their struggles or feelings of isolation. By sharing my journey and the complexities of my upbringing, I hope to foster a sense of connection and community, empowering others to express themselves freely and authentically. My work is a celebration of vulnerability and a reminder that breaking the silence can lead to healing and understanding.
