Rising Stars: Meet Dr. Angela Butts Chester of Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Angela Butts Chester

Hi Dr. Angela, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Virginia, by two loving parents who set the foundation for my faith and values. My parents were married until my father’s passing, and their partnership showed me the power of love, stability, and faith in action. That upbringing has deeply influenced how I approach both my personal life and my work. They instilled an understanding, we are blessed with so much – be a blessing to others.

At 15 or 16, I had a life-changing conversation with my pastor, who saw my potential and introduced me to the idea of Pastoral Counseling. That moment gave me a clear sense of purpose. I knew I wanted to help others through a faith-centered approach, and I’m so glad I followed that calling.

In 2000, I moved to Long Beach, California, and it’s truly become my home. I love the proximity to the ocean—it brings a sense of peace that complements the hustle and bustle of the city. Here, I’ve built a practice rooted in hard work, dedication, and a deep respect for my clients’ diverse needs.

As a Pastoral Counselor, I provide a space for people to explore their emotions and experiences in a judgment-free environment that honors their faith. My client base includes individuals and couples, predominantly Gen X and Millennials, from various Christian and interfaith backgrounds. Many of my clients come from nearby areas like Seal Beach, Anaheim, or Downtown Long Beach, seeking the convenience of my location and the discreet, compassionate care I offer.

One thing I emphasize is that therapy isn’t just for difficult times. Sometimes, people just need a safe space to reflect, decompress, and find clarity without judgment—a “drama-free” zone, if you will. Unfortunately, for some clients that hour is the only time that they will someone is focused on them; they feel seen and heard.

Through my journey, I’ve learned that faith, connection, and a willingness to serve are at the heart of any meaningful work. It’s humbling to walk alongside my clients as they grow, heal, and transform.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My biggest challenge came when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Going through chemo, surgery, and radiation was a tough season, but it also taught me resilience. Ultimately, I was able to rebuild and find my footing again, stronger and more determined than ever. I’ll be 15 years cancer free this year.
For the most part, my journey has been smooth, though it hasn’t been without its challenges. Occasionally, I’ve encountered people with limited beliefs about what I could accomplish. But honestly, that’s their issue, not mine. I learned early on to trust my capabilities and let my results speak for themselves—faith and confidence have been my guiding lights, and always will be.

One of the key decisions I made was starting my practice debt-free. It wasn’t the easiest path, but it gave me peace of mind. I didn’t want the stress of a looming loan while building my dream, so I focused on starting small and growing sustainably.

Before stepping into entrepreneurship full-time, I spent years as an Executive Assistant and Office Manager. Those roles not only provided financial stability but also taught me invaluable skills in leadership, organization, and managing people—all of which I’ve carried into my work today.

Being an entrepreneur has always been my goal, and I credit my father for inspiring that dream. He explained why he chose the entrepreneurial path, and I saw firsthand the rewards of carving out your own vision. I knew I wanted the same.

Of course, like any entrepreneur, I’ve experienced the ups and downs that come with building something meaningful. But I firmly believe in living by the mantra: mind over matter, faith over fear. When you’re rooted in a solid plan and guided by purpose, the challenges are just stepping stones to success. Habbak 2:2 and Jeremiah 29:11 have really helped to keep me moving forward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Good question! My work spans several roles, including Pastoral Counselor, Mediapreneur, Author, Global Women’s Speaker, and Christian Empowerment Coach. Each of these hats reflects a different part of my calling, but they all share a common thread: helping others live empowered lives rooted in faith.

Through my platforms, I provide opportunities for faith-centered individuals to share their products, services, and books with the world. This includes Daily Spark with Dr. Angela, a faith and empowerment-focused radio show, and Daily Spark TV, where I dive into topics that enlighten, inspire, and empower viewers. My print and digital publication, PASSIONEER Magazine, highlights innovative, purpose-driven entrepreneurs, while PASSIONEER Magazine The Podcast continues the conversation, offering deeper insights and connecting audiences with impactful leaders.

As a Global Women’s Speaker, I focus on the unique strengths women bring to leadership, emphasizing the power of empathy in decision-making and the value of being a faith-led leader. I encourage women to embrace their God-given potential and use Christian principles as the foundation for leadership that is both effective and mindful of others.

I’m known by my mottos: “Enlighten, Inspire, and Empower”, which represents the Daily Spark brand, and “Bold Ideas. Brave Pursuits. Boundless Inspiration”, the heart of the PASSIONEER brand. These reflect my commitment to providing content and experiences that motivate others to step boldly into their purpose.

What I’m most proud of is living my purpose. The awards, recognitions, and spotlights I’ve received are wonderful affirmations, but what truly excites me is knowing I am doing what God has called me to do—empowering others to shine their light and fulfill their divine calling. I believe that others see the authentic conversation and desire to help others and that is what matters.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend faith and practicality in a way that resonates deeply with my audience. Whether I’m counseling, speaking, or mentoring, I prioritize creating safe, judgment-free spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. I also bring a unique perspective as both a Pastoral Counselor and an entrepreneur, which allows me to connect with individuals on a personal level while addressing their professional and spiritual needs.
My platforms are distinct in that they don’t just promote faith-centered living—they amplify the voices of others, helping them share their messages, services, and stories with the world. I’m intentional about encouraging empowerment that is not only inspirational but also actionable, helping people embrace their purpose and walk boldly in their calling.

Above all, I believe in leading with empathy and authenticity, and that’s reflected in everything I do, from my one-on-one counseling sessions to my global speaking engagements. Faith guides my steps, and that foundation sets the tone for how I show up and serve others; boldly!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis taught me several profound lessons, both personally and professionally. First, it reinforced the importance of adaptability. Like many others, I had to pivot quickly to continue serving my clients and audience. Transitioning to virtual sessions and embracing more digital platforms allowed me to maintain connection and support during a time of widespread uncertainty.

I also learned the value of creating spaces for people to feel heard and validated. The pandemic brought about a unique blend of fear, grief, and isolation, and for many, it was the first time they sought out counseling or empowerment resources. It became clear how critical it is to offer grace and empathy—not just as a professional, but as a human being. My Pivot for Purpose coaching program was created during this time.

Another important takeaway was recognizing the power of community. Even in isolation, people found ways to come together through technology, mutual support, and faith. This reminded me of the resilience we have when we lean on each other and on God.

On a personal level, the crisis deepened my appreciation for health, family, and purpose. It reminded me that time is precious, and aligning our lives with what truly matters—faith, love, and service—is the greatest investment we can make.
