Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug MacDonald.
Hi Doug, We’re so excited to have you on the platform. Before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started playing music at age 13 and have been very persistent in studying art ever since. Alongside the guitar, I have always wanted to master the techniques of composition and arranging. It makes you a more complete musician.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It had been an exciting journey. It has been a prolonged climb, like an elevator, stopping at every floor. Those were some rough spots, but at this time, things are going better than ever!
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us a bit more about your work.
My style of playing is what’s known as mainstream jazz . In my over 15 recordings as a leader, I’ve experimented with various instrumentations, from solo guitar to big band .This diversity not only frames the guitar in unique ways but also serves as a distinctive writing feature.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The sound I produce on my instrument is a key attribute to my success. I also believe that a sense of swing or groove, along with a perpetual blues feeling in the music, adds a unique dimension to my compositions. In terms of writing, I’ve incorporated atonal and classical concepts into the jazz idiom, further enriching my musical style.
