Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Trevino
Hi Dominique, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Dominique and I’ve been a hairstylist for 4 years now. I’ve always been so passionate about working in the beauty industry and my boyfriend finally pushed me to go to school. I went to school, and while I was in school I was hustling! I was working right after school taking clients at my house until midnight and then go back to school the next day. Once I graduated and got my license I was already doing booth rent aka working for myself renting a booth at a salon in Riverside. I was also assisting in Redlands,Ca with my friend/mentor George who taught me sooo much and i thank god for him. It’s so funny how I met the owners at my current salon Bonne Vie (the best salon in L.A COUNTY!) was in Orlando,FL at the One Shot hair awards. I got my first nomination for top 100 for color transformation and I happened to meet them and we instantly clicked! Crystal mentioned that I should work at their salon but I had no idea where Glendora was or even if my clients would drive out that far. So i waited about a month to think about it and i ended up taking that leap of faith and moving to La county! It’s honestly the best salon, best owners, and best coworkers, we all just get along! We all have the same work ethic and strive together! Bonne Vie is my home <3
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some challenges I would say is that the hair industry/ being self employed isn’t for the weak. There are days where you’re constantly overthinking about “Will clients text me to book?” “Hopefully I have enough for bills next month” you’re literally providing income for yourself so it can be tough because every month is different, there’s slow season and you just always have to be ready for that. I wouldn’t change it because it is worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist and I specialize in reds and copper haircolor. I’ve been a redhead myself for about 3 years and it’s the best color I think everyone needs to do once in their life! lol. I’m most proud of getting my formulas down on what looks best on my clients skin tone and how to enhance it. What sets me apart from others is that my colors are always so rich and vibrant!
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Sometimes you just have to take that leap of faith and take that risk like I did when i moved to L.A county. I was praying my clients would follow me because I came from the I.E area, but i was willing to take that risk because I just knew working at that salon would benefit me 100%! Everything did work out and most of my clients still came to me, I probably lost a couple but i also gained more clients too! It was a win win!
