Rising Stars: Meet Dipen Patel of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dipen Patel.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m excited to share my journey, which has been shaped by my passion, persistence, and creativity. I knew I was destined for a career in the creative field, particularly in the entertainment industry, from a young age. Growing up, I was captivated by films. I eagerly participated in school plays and small stage productions, which boosted my confidence and solidified my dream of performing and storytelling.

After graduating in my early 20s, I took the plunge and began pursuing acting professionally. I started my journey in Mumbai, where I worked as an actor and model. Over the years, I have appeared in several short films, including “Kaash,” “Checkmate: The Game Continues,” “Tokiye Aur Rokiye (Use Me),” “Vicar Ka Achar (Open Mind Before Mouth),” and “Bhavra,” as well as commercials and TV serials.

The more time I spent on set, the more curious I became about the behind-the-scenes aspects of filmmaking. I wanted to explore the technical side—how lighting, camera angles, and equipment can shape a story. This curiosity led me to cinematography. I started experimenting with my phone, shooting and editing short films with basic software. That experience ignited a passion in me, driving me to learn and explore the art and science of visual storytelling.

Eventually, this passion brought me to Los Angeles, where I could explore cinematography on an international scale. My journey—from humble beginnings in Gujarat and Mumbai to working with global brands in LA—is just unfolding.

Upon arriving in LA, I realized I needed to keep learning to stand out in this competitive field. I committed to improving my skills, mastering industry-standard editing tools, and understanding the principles of lighting and composition. I began networking with fashion brands, beauty companies, influencers, and fellow creatives, offering my cinematography for commercial collaborations.

My dedication started to pay off. Over time, brands began to recognize my work, leading me to shoot commercials that looked stunning and resonated deeply with audiences. My attention to detail—especially the research I conduct for each brand—sets my work apart. I immerse myself in their values, audience, and messaging to create connective visuals.

My understanding of editing and color theory enables me to select frames and contrasts that elevate a brand’s identity. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating the proper emotional connection.

Throughout the years, I have been honored to receive several film awards. “Not in This World” won at both the Rohip International Film Festival and the Kodaikanal International Film Festival in 2024, while “First Light” garnered accolades from the 6th Everest International Film Festival and the Pittsburgh Moving Picture Festival. My commercial work has reached millions of viewers and includes partnerships with notable brands such as Monaco Colombia, Boohoo Man, Upper Case, Dico Beauty, Fresh Beauty, and Skin Tight.

What began as a child actor on small stages has blossomed into a career encompassing acting, filmmaking, and crafting visual stories that resonate with people. I’m incredibly proud of my progress, but I know much more is ahead. I’m just starting—and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Pursuing a dream in the entertainment industry always comes with challenges, no matter how deep your roots are or if you are a complete outsider. Starting as a cinematographer was a challenging transition because there was a lot to learn. Once you’re behind the camera, you must deal with many things, such as understanding camera gear, which is constantly evolving with new technology. Keeping up with these changes and maintaining that pace is crucial for achieving my goals.

Here I am today, having landed in Los Angeles. As soon as I arrived, I faced one big question: who will trust my skills and ability to work? After several years of challenges, I finally found the right group of people to work with, which has helped me grow into someone known for my work.

In this fast-growing digital media environment, my journey began with creating quick-paced commercials for various brands. I always need to be creative and stay ahead of obstacles. My family and close friends have supported me through this tough journey, providing a strong backbone during difficult times. As a newcomer, I realized the importance of seeking help from others in the industry to stay focused and continue doing what I love.

Obstacles and challenges have made me more determined to work towards my goals and achievements, allowing me to learn from my failures and grow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
Living in Los Angeles is truly a unique experience, and it’s hard to pinpoint something I dislike about this city. Let’s start with what I love about it. One thing that everyone who visits or lives here can agree on is the beautiful weather and stunning sunsets. As someone who enjoys fitness, I appreciate the abundance of hiking and outdoor activities. Working in the entertainment and film industry, I know Hollywood, the birthplace of so much cinema, is here in Los Angeles.

This combination of outdoor activities—from water sports to outdoor workouts and running—makes it feel like paradise to me. The access to public parks for running is fantastic. The community’s diversity and varying living standards also appeal to me. The convenience of reaching desirable locations for shoots is a massive plus in LA, coupled with the consistent good lighting and welcoming people, which make me feel like I’m growing as a cinematographer. Driving through iconic Hollywood locations and experiencing the vibrant streets of Los Angeles fills me with inspiration.

I love how different neighborhoods are distinct from one another. From the fashion district to the diamond market, Hollywood, and the business district, Los Angeles has a classic charm that resonates with me. The art libraries, historical museums, and breathtaking houses on the hills contribute to its unique quality. Los Angeles—the City of Angels—is true to its name. The energy and manifestation of dreams here are palpable; people genuinely believe in positivity and faith.

I dislike the busy roads and freeways the most, but I understand that this is part of life in LA. Sometimes, traveling by public transport can take longer than expected, but I find it acceptable. The cost of living can also be high, which is a challenge, but it’s a trade-off I’m willing to accept.
