Rising Stars: Meet DeShawn Cavanaugh

Today we’d like to introduce you to DeShawn Cavanaugh.

DeShawn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My creative journey started in high school, I was involved in show choir and all of our school plays and musicals. After high school, I moved out to LA and began pursuing a career in the film and television industry with interest in acting dancing and music. I began navigating the industry learning and absorbing as much information as I could from as many people as I could, I took their advice and invested in myself and classes. I even appeared on some game shows and talk shows early on. Once I was able to afford acting classes here in LA, I started auditioning and began growing my knowledge and experience even more. Taking my first steps into on camera acting. Now I have established myself as an actor and artist here and am continuing to expand to new opportunities, most recently you can find me acting and dancing as Colt Cassidy on NBC Peacocks Saved by the Bell series.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been an interesting one. I have struggled in the past with securing myself financially here in LA, but I have always worked hard and not been afraid to “work my butt off” in order to provide for myself. Coming from a single parent home I knew just how important hard work and commitment are, and just like my mom did I learned to take care of my needs and make friends and colleagues to support me in my endeavors. Very proud and happy to say I am in a much better place and am comfortably able to provide for myself only because of my hard work and support.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an actor, artist and creative. I specialize in TV & Film and have a lot of experience in comedy. I’ve trained in improv at The Groundlings and UCB and love to laugh and play fun characters. I also am a community leader by hosting an open mic night for singers, comedians and musicians (starting back June 24th at Crave Cafe in Studio City). I also dance and train at studios here in LA. I am most known for my acting you can see my full list of credits on IMDB but Saved by the bell, Ballers HBO, Schooled ABC, and R#J a Romeo and Juliet reimagining are some of my favorite projects I’ve worked on recently. I’m most proud of my can do attitude and being able to help support and connect with other artists and creatives.

What sets me apart is my willingness to grow and learn with anyone I’m fortunate enough to work with. I love to learn from others and bring value and teach when I can. I love seeing a vision and helping make it bigger and brighter.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has been there, I think everything in life is a combination on being prepared and ready for an opportunity while trusting and putting your faith in the universe that if it is meant for you, it will come. I was born in march so the four leaf clover and luck, I believe have always been at my side, and I think believing its there has allowed for it to show up for me when I need it.
