Today we’d like to introduce you to Deja Monique Cruz
Hi Deja Monique, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was a little girl, I was always excited about what I was seeing on stage and curious about what was behind the scenes of movie and television sets.
Once I got to high school, a good friend invited me to our advanced theater class and told me there would be games and snacks involved, so you know I was there. The minute I got a script my hand I knew I found my passion. Being able to step outside of myself and owning another character allowed me to become a great storyteller. Within a couple years, I was able to build my resume, get representation and book my very first major role on Law & Order: SVU. After my first booking I worked on my craft and was blessed to book my first series regular role on Disney+ The Crossover. Fortunately, I was grateful enough to book a few feature films. This has been a beautiful journey and I can’t wait to see what God has in store for me. LET’S GOOO!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I will say it doesn’t happen over night , but if you have the passion and you’re dedicated the hard work will pay off. One week it can feel like nothing is happening and there are no opportunities and other weeks there are many opportunities at once. I have learned that this is why drive and time management are so important. You cannot let obstacles deter you from your goal. Like having your wisdom teeth pulled, and having a chemistry read the next day. You have to be able to dedicate the time to get your work done and give your absolute best no matter the time of day or deadline. All the decisions I have made led me to where I am today. Whatever struggle comes your way , know that you are not the only one dealing with it , there are always other artists on the same road. You just have to give it your all.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist overall. I specialize in acting, songwriting, singing, and producing. I’m known for my roles on television shows and feature films. I have produced my own music video and co produced a feature film. I currently have a YouTube channel, be sure to check it out! I am dropping my first music video very soon! I’m looking forward to writing and producing new music. I’m proud to be given the opportunities to express myself myself through my work and make a difference. My curiosity, energy, and light sets me apart from others. I couldn’t do any of my work without the support and love around me.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am willing to take a risk as an actress to own the character even if the role makes me uncomfortable. I don’t say yes to every role, but I’m open to seeing what is offered. Once I evaluate the risk of taking on the character, that’s when I make my decision. My risks are calculated. In life, however, we take risks everyday. We wouldn’t be fully appreciative of the life we have been giving if we didn’t.
