Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Hall.
Hi Dean, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love of fashion started as a child. I’d always looked up to my grandpa and cousin who were both extremely world with impeccable style. It wasn’t until I was about 24 (over ten years ago) that I realized styling was my love. It started with styling friends, then I would style their parents for charities events.
I created a blog which was pretty bad when I look back hahahaha, but you have to start somewhere right? My friend Love called me one night and asked what exactly was I trying to do in fashion? We talked and she presented an opportunity that really snowballed my career. Love introduced me to Basketball Wives star Royce Reee and I dressed her for several events. From there I became the fashion editor of local San Diego magazine, had my own fashion segment on Fox 5, and ended up working with a variety of celebrities. I found that editorial styling was where my heart was and I did that for many years including GQ, Elle, Maxim, Modern Luxury, and many others. It’s been a wonderful ride and as of recently, I’ve moved into private styling for executives and luxury brands.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was quite the opposite of smooth for a multitude of reasons. My biggest hurdle was that I didn’t want to move to LA. Quality of live has also been a top priority and San Diego was and still is my home. Additionally, I never had an agent. It was important to me that I decide the rooms I’d be in. Yes, it was harder but the victory was just that much sweeter.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently I work with top executives, attorneys, doctors, etc. and curate their wardrobes. This includes speaking engagements, print media, and any other press. My specialty is working with men and helping them to develop a style all their own. I still work with women occasionally though. I’m most proud of building a name for myself in a city I absolutely love and have never left. San Diego is not New York, or Miami, or LA but there is soooo much style here.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d like to share that there is something to be said about those who march to the beat of their own drum. Do things your way and don’t let others dictate your career path.
