Today we’d like to introduce you to Conor James.
Hi Conor, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began writing music in the solitude of my bedroom as a queer weirdo kid in small-town Massachusetts. Put into contact sports at a young age, my subconscious mind absorbed the extremes of societal gender norms and the puzzling survival technique of being true to myself, themes that pervade his music to this day. I claim my intrinsic power by nurturing my trade as a self-taught musician and producer, treating my studio as a laboratory and committing to a process-over-product philosophy. Unafraid to be publicly clumsy, I make art as a means to understand the ever-uncertain world around me, faltering along the way deliberately (and beautifully, I hope).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It continues to be difficult but never not worth it. I struggle very much with striking the balance between unfiltered, pure expression and packaging my art in a way that the world can understand. I find it difficult to unify my personal and artistic aesthetic with the sound of my music and the mission statement of my career. Also, it can be very difficult for all of us to plan for the future and create new media while the ecology of the Earth crumbles before us, racist, xenophobic, and sexist policies prevail, and our socioeconomic systems leave us to suffer and die.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a songwriter, producer, vocalist, musician, and narrative artist. My biggest strength is painting a vivid lyrical picture and discussing themes of sexuality and gender that aren’t often touched on by men.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Not everyone will get it and that’s awesome.
