Today we’d like to introduce you to Chung Wei Wang
Hi Chung Wei , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey started with a love for art and creating things as a child. I pursued this passion through a master’s degree in Industrial Design at Parsons School of Design in New York, where I developed my skills and vision. Over the years, I’ve worked in different countries like the Netherlands, Japan, China, and the United States, learning from diverse cultures and refining my approach. I found out that the objects in our daily lives can be very interesting and interactive in various perspectives.
Today, I specialize in industrial and furniture design, with a focus on creating products that connect people to their environment and spark curiosity. From furniture pieces to electronic products that enrich everyday interactions, my work is about enhancing the relationship between people and the objects they interact with.
It’s been a rewarding journey filled with challenges and growth, and I’m excited to continue exploring new ways design can bring meaning to our lives.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The path hasn’t always been smooth, but the challenges have been invaluable in shaping who I am as a designer. For example, during the pandemic, I lost many opportunities to connect with people and observe the world around me. This pushed me to pursue further studies in New York, where I immersed myself in art and design. Starting a new chapter in a vibrant city introduced me to diverse cultures and perspectives, which deeply influenced my approach to design. These experiences enriched my understanding of the interaction between people and objects, a focus that remains at the heart of my work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an industrial and furniture designer specializing in creating products that connect people to their environments in meaningful ways. My work focuses on designing interactive objects that blend functionality with emotional and poetic experiences. For example, one of my project, Eclsion, a modular planter designed to raise butterflies and support pollination in urban areas. It’s a piece that not only serves a functional purpose but also encourages people to build a deeper connection to nature and the cycles of life.
What sets me apart is my dedication to fostering interaction and curiosity through design. I’m most proud of creating products that resonate with people on a personal level, encouraging them to engage with objects in unique and thoughtful ways. My goal is to design with intention, crafting pieces that not only serve a purpose but also inspire a deeper connection to everyday life.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis taught me the importance of adaptability and finding new ways to connect with the world. During the pandemic, the loss of face-to-face interactions and the chance to observe daily life was challenging, but it pushed me to reflect deeply on my work and its purpose.
This period inspired me to focus on creating designs that foster interaction, allowing everyone to engage and create in their unique way. Each result is something to be celebrated and cherished, reflecting the beauty of individuality. I’m fascinated by the countless possibilities and the unpredictability that arises when people interact with designs, turning every experience into something unique and meaningful.
