Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Sutton.
Hi Chuck, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m born and raised in Montclair, New Jersey, in a family full of creatives. My mom designs clothes, my sister is a filmmaker, my older brother has followed my late father’s steps in the TV industry, and my younger brother does music like me. My journey as an artist started in middle school. I had heard electronic music before, but it was the music from Skrillex and the dubstep era that really caught me. It made me fall in love with music that always keeps you guessing. That era of music had me pick up dancing, DJing, and producing all within a short span of time, doing anything I could to get a deeper understanding of what I was hearing. I found out that Ableton Live was the name of the program my favorite artists were using at the time, and to say I became addicted is a terrible understatement. Those couple of years pretty much set up the rest of my life. Every time I play a show, it’s an amalgamation of every skill I fell in love with as a kid, with my newfound passion for education.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Wanting to be a full time artist, producer, and educator is a strange combination already. I first wanted to be this around 2015-2016, which the title didn’t really exist. Now it’s 10 years later, and there’s so many social media platforms, communities, and resources, it can be an intimidating amount of noise to cut through at times! Chasing these dreams don’t guarantee anything, and that’s a risk I’ve been learning to live with for a while, and now i’m in the phase of transforming it into what I need it to be.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I wear a lot of different hats! I love making original music, remixes, producing for my friends, editing videos, and teaching where I can. The world i’m in and the things I love typically have a very niche, nerdy reputation. The way I present it, format it, and the ways I’ve been able to connect with so many people over my craft is what i’m most proud of. I think what sets me apart from others, is the length i’m willing to go to make sure everybody in a room is on the same page, it’s what I use my art to do.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t feel like a risk taker, but I definitely am! To make up a career path from such a young age and stick to it can be daunting if it’s not your calling. But it doesn’t feel like there’s ever been another option, it’s just my life. I create, I share, I teach, I perform, and fortunately other people enjoy it as much as I do.
