Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Kissick.
Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I graduated from Vidal Sassoon in 1988, and have been a hairstylist ever since. Over the 30+ years I’ve been in this industry I’ve worked at a handful of salons and have been a hair color educator. For about 5 years in the middle of my career I worked in the Television and Film industry doing hair and makeup, but I realized that I preferred the ongoing relationships with my clientele to the entertainment industry. Now I am lucky to have a home studio, and work behind the chair 3 days a week. I love helping people with their transformations. I also am an extensionist, as well as a makeup artist. So I can really help with some extreme makeovers.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been mostly smooth sailing, staying relevant is a must in the beauty industry, so continuing education is really important. This career only works if you’re a people person, but occasionally you get a bit of burnout, so balance and self is key. It took me many years to figure out that at the end of a day of talking to people about their lives, families, jobs, love life’s and many more topics, I need a bit of alone quiet time. Don’t get me wrong I love that part of what I do, and you have to be able to decompress.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I enjoy all aspects of being a stylist, again I love going from consultation to final chair turn and see the look on a clients face. I feel that to be successful in this you have to put your ego aside, and be a great listener, then be willing to be honest with what is possible and what isn’t. You must care and almost not care at the same time if that makes sense. I’ve been told time and time again that my haircuts grow out perfectly! So I guess that sets me apart, but I’m really into the complete makeover. Also location work is so much fun, whether it’s a wedding or photo shoot or holiday party getting somebody into the look that they want is a blast
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Once upon a time a stockbroker client said to me”you’re a genius, because you picked a career that can never be taken over by a computer!” So even though this Industry changes slightly every season and every year there are new ways of doing things, I don’t see any huge changes in the future. In my 5-10 year foreseeable future I see maybe going back into some kind of educating, probably online since that’s the way, well I would say of the future, however I think we’re there currently.
