Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris James.
Hi Chris, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a half-American / half-German artist/songwriter living in Berlin, Germany. I started out posting to my YouTube Channel and posting cover videos of myself 10 years ago. After moving on from covers, I started writing songs for myself and for other artists. I immersed myself in a bunch of different genres and tried out many things before I started releasing songs as “Chris James”. My biggest co-write was for the K-Pop Band BTS with their single “Life Goes On”. In parallel one of my songs “Not Angry” went viral in China seemingly overnight and ended up amassing me a large fanbase in South East Asia and China. Leading up to today, I’m in the process of releasing a new EP after having released a trilogy of albums independently over the past three years.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve been dropped by two major labels over the course of my career and they have sparked a significant amount of doubt in me while I was still developing my sound. I also realized that I needed to maintain a certain amount of independence to be truly happy with the art I create.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I write and produce songs for myself and for other artists. I’m great at collaborating with other artists by helping them find their next song to put out, probably because I know how hard it is to be an artist and all the doubts and worries that come with pursuing a career in music. With my own music, I have stayed true to my values when it comes to maintaining independence, which I am super proud of. I’ve also stayed fairly consistent with my output of music by releasing a song every month for the past two and a half years.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My manager, Pablo, really helps me on every front and we started working together when I was at my lowest point of my career. He helped me restart and restructure everything from the ground up and I don’t know where I would be without him. My friends in Berlin and my hometown Düsseldorf have also kept me grounded over the past ten years of making music, which I am incredibly thankful for.
