Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Mack.
Hi Chase, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was younger, I grew up watching SpongeBob, Disney, and Pixar movies and wanted to create something I would want to see on TV when I was a kid. I then began to make comic books that featured me and my family pretending to go on random adventures and being superheroes. They were awful but helped boost my imagination. When I moved to high school, I wanted to learn how to animate to make my ideas come to life. I taught myself After Effects and spent a good chunk of high school making short films. They were also terrible, but it was the closest experience to feeling like a director. In college, I wanted to pursue storyboarding since it combined my passion for directing and drawing. I used everything I learned for my capstone project to make a short animated film. The film screened at multiple festivals, including a few that were Oscar-qualifying. Since then, I went on to intern at Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar and most recently finishing up the Artist Program at Nickelodeon.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not entirely. My main struggle was COVID affecting the state of the industry and making it hard to connect with coworkers since we were remote for most of it. Since moving to LA, it has been nice reconnecting with people I’ve worked with over Zoom and meeting new people in the industry.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Storyboard Artist for animation. I feel like I’m a little early in my journey to be known for something but I am proud of my short film that I mentioned earlier, Dear Destiny. It was a labor of love with help from an amazing team that you can watch on my site! I was also shown on a billboard in Times Square once, if that makes me cool.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Community. Whether it be your iconic friend group or your coworkers, community is something to depend on. They want you to show the best version of yourself in your work or day life and I feel like that’s crucial. Moving to LA has been a big jump for me, so talking with my friend groups from home makes me feel less homesick. Also, they make me laugh, and I really like to laugh.
