Today we’d like to introduce you to Charity Rose.
Hi Charity, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in the rural foothills outside of Fresno, California, where my family had a large garden and farm animals. I was kind of thrown into the life of performing by my four older siblings, who, when I was four years old, auditioned and were all cast in a musical. We began driving into town for rehearsals every day. After that, we moved to town and my brothers and sisters were performing in musicals one right after another. Our family became very involved in theatre in Fresno. I am the baby of the family so I had little choice in the matter, but watching my siblings practice everyday and be on stage created in me such a deep love of performing. I was a little tag along and saw all of the shows which I memorized and recited and performed at home until I was seven when I had my first audition and was cast in the Junior Company of the Good Company Players. The Junior Company performs the preshow for each musical, and I was thrilled to finally be on that stage singing and dancing along my sisters. I got to perform in my first musical when I was cast in Annie as Molly. We loved performing so much that it was hard for my mom to get us to take a break! But we finally agreed not to audition and decided to spend the summer in LA attending some intensive camps for musical theatre and film.
I learned SO much, and to my whole family’s surprise, we decided not to return to Fresno! We met a talent manager who encouraged us to stay in LA and pursue a career, so I have been studying, auditioning, and working ever since. I have had the privilege of working on many different genres of short films, as well as commercials, a pilot, a music video, a feature film, and live theatre. Some of my favorite roles have been playing kids who struggle. It would seem depressing, but I have enjoyed walking in many different characters’ shoes. One of my favorites was an abused little girl who tries to hire and befriends a hitman. It was a dark comedy and I really did befriend the actor who played the hitman and we had a blast together. One of my other favorites was a very difficult and emotional role. It was a period short film where the girl’s mother suffered from depression and took her life. I also have experienced a little bit of the Great Depression as well as the horrors of family scars. One of my favorite parts of playing these roles is the experience I have with my scene partners and my directors. We become like a family and it’s always so sad when we are wrapped. My favorite commercial experience was jumping into Lake Tahoe multiple times in November. It was FREEZING. In the summer of 2019, I got an opportunity to perform on stage again! I was cast in the regional premiere of Matilda as Matilda at the Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista. It was one of my favorite audition experiences.
At the callbacks, they wanted to cast me but they knew I had a lot more experience in film than in theatre so they were concerned I couldn’t project in that large amphitheatre. They took me out to the stage and went to the back and asked me to perform one of Matilda’s monologues. I started and they stopped me, so we went home thinking I must not have been loud enough. I was thrilled when I got the offer for Matilda! I learned a lot of lessons from that mistreated but magical and feisty little girl! The project I am working on now is a feature film. I am playing a little girl who doesn’t fit in and wishes she was someone else. I love being an actress, I am bringing a character off of the page and into life. I have experienced so much already. Acting allows me to be people I would never be and go places that I may never go, as well as live in different time periods. And I have met people from all over the world. I love pursuing this dream alongside my sisters, Anna Rose and Glory Joy Rose. I’m thankful for my supportive parents and sisters, who help me with it all. My manager is Nikki Mincks, Mincks Talent Management and my agents are Milton Perea, Nicole Jolley, and Katelyn Giroux at AEFH. I am thankful for the wonderful team I work with and I look forward to what is next.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been smooth. It hasn’t been easy for my parents to move, but they made it work. I miss my extended family in Fresno, but we are not too far. I think the biggest challenge for me was learning how to audition. It was hard to learn the lines and go into the room with the camera on me. I also struggled with self-tapes. I would want to do it over and over and was never happy with it. It would take hours. But I can now learn lines very quickly. I have learned how to audition confidently, take notes and make adjustments. I know now that I am either right for the part or not. Either way, I do my best and that’s that. Another huge challenge, which we all have experienced is Covid 19. My sisters and I were so busy with auditions and callbacks and a few pins up to the day everything shut down. That has changed everything. But we have not given up. We know things are very different now for everyone, but we are determined and hopeful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
One thing that I love about my situation is that I am in this with my sisters. We work together and support each other in this acting journey which has a lot of highs and lows. We help each other with self-tapes, rehearsing, and even coaching. And it’s not just my sisters, one of my brothers, Timothy Scott is here in LA acting as well. It is a family affair and it’s so much more fun that way.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I’m still growing up! I am the baby of the family. There are 16 years between myself and my oldest brother. So I think I was able to do a lot more and had more opportunities because of them. And being that theatre was such a part of most of my life, I have always played with my toys in scenes, and usually my scenes had to do with whatever show was happening at the time. Aside from acting, I love riding horses, climbing trees, and reading. I’m a total animal lover and spend a lot of time with my cats and my new puppy. My family helps rescue and foster feral kittens, and I love helping with them.
