Today we’d like to introduce you to Brook Sodell
Hi Brook, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I was captivated by the thrill of collecting blind boxes and toys. Each surprise held the promise of a new character or world, igniting my imagination. This passion naturally evolved into a desire to design my own variations, allowing me to put a personal spin on the toys. This understanding inspired me to shift my focus to illustration, where I could create vibrant, imaginative worlds that resonate with others as I create figures based on my illustrations.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In a sense no road is smooth, and my journey has seen countless failed creations and illustrations. Each failure reminds me that I am human. I’ve spent hours struggling with a piece, unsure of what’s wrong and hesitant to toss it. But letting go of that fear has made it easier to grow.
For now, my journey continues to unfold, and only the future can reveal what comes next.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in illustration and toys, and I believe what sets me apart is my passion for color and my determination to keep trying, even in the face of failure. Transitioning out of college has been a challenging adjustment, but I’ve committed to daily projects that allow me to continue pursuing what I love. As for one of my proudest achievements right now is my Spilt Milk toy, which was among my first 3D printed creations. Through trial and error, it closely matched my initial concepts.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
When I was a kid, I was very shy yet outgoing. I would doodle in my class notebooks and homework all the time. I loved sharing my drawings with friends and making up stories along the way. Cartoons and toys were a big interest of mine; it’s hard to believe that my passion for collecting still continues to today and that I’m now on the creating side.
