Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Scott Wolf.
Hi Brandon Scott, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, everyone reading this! I’m Brandon Scott Wolf, a comedy writer, producer, voice actor, interviewee, and potentially your neighbor if you live in Los Angeles, and I’m constantly developing, writing, and collaborating on new creative ideas on my own and with friends.
I’ve contributed writing to Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update with Seth Meyers, creatively produced Will Smith’s social media channels, and coached up SpongeBob to host the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
That’s right! I’ve worked with the big three: Meyers. Smith. SquarePants.
But, to answer your question, I started writing and performing comedy while attending Penn State University from 2007 to 2011. I joined PHROTH, a satirical humor magazine, and shortly after getting a few articles published, I wanted to try my hand at performing live stand up.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t a stand-up community in State College, PA back then so I held an open mic night in my second floor apartment and that was the start of Second Floor Stand-up, which went on to become an officially recognized Penn State student organization that still exists to this day.
These experiences led me down a path that included winning the 2011 TBS and RooftopComedy National College Comedy Competition where I was named “The Funniest College Student in America,” moving to New York so I could pursue comedy writing and stand up, and launching platforms that showcased my unique voice like @HireMeSNL on Twitter and my now defunct dating website parody Date Brandon Scott Wolf dot com: The #1 Online Dating Site for Brandon Scott Wolf.
This combination of writing, performing, and throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks is how I ended up where I’m at today. My wife, the amazingly talented director, writer, and producer Jacque Medina, and I run a production banner, Twin Fungus Productions: Offbeat Stories That Grow On You, and we’ve been working with our friends over the years to create short films, feature scripts, TV pitches, branded content, comics, adult animation, and so much more.
Two projects that I’m really excited about are:
MEGASKULL, a hybrid live action-stop motion short film I co-wrote with my hilarious friend, Jared Corwin, and directed by the aforementioned visionary, Jacque Medina, that follows a manosphere influencer who overdoses on a non-FDA approved protein powder causing a toxically positive worm to crawl into his brain and take control of his actions. Think of it as incel Ratatouille.
And, over the last year, I’ve consistently developed, written, produced, and voiced characters for PALMDALE FLEA, a comic strip turned adult animated series co-created by myself and amazing syndicated cartoonist and animator Nate Fakes. The series follows Danny, a himbo entrepreneur, who owns and runs a flea market muffin stand with his on-again-off-again girlfriend’s 8-year-old son, Graig, whose biggest dream is to become a coordinator at a marketing firm!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve failed a lot over the years.
A lot, a lot.
But I don’t think failing is bad. Everyone needs to fail and recognize they’re failing in order to learn, grow, and continue moving forward.
I’ve submitted countless TV packets, written plenty of pilots and screenplays, launched campaigns, shared pitches, sent out cold emails, hopped on calls, met for coffee, shook hands, put my best foot forward, and fallen flat on my face time and time again.
I can proudly say “I’ve been rejected by the biggest names in comedy and entertainment,” but for every 99 failures, there’s always one success.
Now, the ratio may not be exactly 99 to one… it may be even worse, but I take pride knowing that I’ve continued to pursue my dream of being a writer.
The “pursuit of continuing” is so important. If you enjoy what you’re doing, keep doing it. You may reach your original goal or you might discover something you love even more.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve been writing, producing, and creating entertainment of all shapes and sizes for the last two decades, but I’m most proud of being able to work with so many talented people.
In college, when I helped co-found Second Floor Stand-up, that was special because I not only performed comedy on stage, but there was an entire community of comedians who were passionate about building our club and I’m fortunate to still call many of them friends.
The same can be said for many of the projects I’ve worked on over the years whether they’re short films, adult animated series, social media performance art, or whatever label you want to put on my work. It’s always amazing to collaborate with brilliant, original, artistic people from all walks of life.
I never want to be the funniest, smartest, or most interesting person in a room. My goal is to surround myself with the best and create together. Thankfully, that’s been the case for most of my career.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Don’t be a jerk.
We should all be leading with kindness, positivity, and support.
I understand that there are only 24 hours in a day, we’re all busy people, and we can’t be everywhere at once, but the interactions we have on Zoom, at the office, or even at the grocery store matter.
It never hurts to lead with a compliment about a person’s script, hold the door open for whoever’s behind you, or give the bartender a couple bucks extra when you leave a tip.
When I was in my early 20s, I asked for stand-up advice from two New York comedians who were doing well in the scene, and I separately asked them “What can I do to improve my act?”
One comic was incredibly warm, shared a lot of personal anecdotes, and made me feel like I was on the right path. The other comic said: “You should quit.”
The latter made me feel awful, but that experience was ultimately a positive.
I’ve never intentionally wanted to make anyone feel that way so I’ve made it my mission to always try my best to help out anyone asking for advice. After all, you catch more flies with honey than telling them “You should quit.”
