Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Lapidus.
Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been writing songs and playing in bands since I was 14. After many creative adventures, including co-writing a pop punk musical (now musical podcast called “Who Killed Avril Lavigne?”), I decided to post my first musical comedy video to TikTok. That very first video ended up being the Parmesan Cheese Song, which I would go on to perform on AGT. Over the course of a couple of years, I built an audience doing this pop-punk, observational comedy thing. It’s been a lot of fun, and I never could have predicted it would take me anywhere interesting.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main struggle has been the constant negotiation with social media. As we all know, it’s bad for your brain. And yet, it’s given me so much and allowed my content to get out there. So, I’m always course-correcting, deleting the apps and redownloading them, redoubling my efforts to make stuff, and taking extended time off. It’s an ongoing process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make music, both serious and comedic, but most people know me for my comedic stuff. I’m proud that I’ve found a way to make hardcore punk and metal music funny. One of the first things I did that went super viral was a punk song asking the question, does the pet store PETSMART mean Pet Smart or Pet’s Mart, and demanding answers.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned that making art is really just a way of staying sane in a crisis. And everything else that might happen as a result is just gravy.
