Rising Stars: Meet Ashley Kiehm of Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Kiehm

Hi Ashley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I got my cosmetology license when I was 19. I graduated from Paul Mitchell in Temecula, Ca. And from there grew my business. I knew from 10 years old that I was going to be a hairstylist. I always knew I wanted to work for myself and make my own schedule and now that’s exactly what I’m doing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road. When I graduated cosmetology school, I went straight into booth rent, which I would never recommend. And at that salon, it was very cut throat and just very nasty. The owner was incredibly mean and said I would never make it in the beauty industry. She would steal my clients from me and I finally had enough and left. I moved to Redondo Beach and grew my clientele from scratch. It’s definitely hard work but so worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in lived in color. I love this look because it’s low maintenance yet effective. I am a very low maintenance girl. I don’t have alot of time to sit in the salon all the time, getting my hair done every few weeks. Lived in makes it look like you got your hair done yesterday but in reality, it was months ago. Great for my low maintenance girls!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I do Olympic Weightlifting as my hobby. I even did local competitions a few years ago. Something I really really enjoy and makes me feel good about myself.
