Today we’d like to introduce you to Artur Aslanyan.
Hi Artur, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Art House Bakery grew out of a turning point for our family. After facing a serious health challenge, we began looking at food in a new way and started baking as a form of healing. What began as a few kitchen experiments soon became a passion for creating breads that were both healthy and exciting.
Our goal has always been to bake with purpose like using real ingredients, pushing general expectations of how classic recipes are supposed to taste, and keeping it creative.
Since opening in North Hollywood, we’ve added a lot of new items to our menu, like our twist on
traditional gata, and expanded our delivery services.
We love connecting with the community through farmers markets, grocery store pop-ups, and social media, where we keep things light and share where we’ll be next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting from scratch as a small family business was our first challenge. We had to learn everything at once, from sourcing quality ingredients to managing production and reaching new customers. It took time, patience, and a lot of trial and error to find our rhythm. But now, we’ve expanded our production windows to meet increasing volume demands.
Another obstacle has been balancing creativity with the day-to-day work of running a bakery. We’re constantly experimenting with new recipes while also managing deliveries, partnerships, and events. Growing our presence has meant staying active in the community, setting up tastings from Chatsworth and Granada Hills to Pasadena, partnering with local markets, and bringing our bread directly to people. Every step has taught us something new about perseverance and connection.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Bakery–
We’ve been experimenting a lot lately, especially with our breads. Our charcoal lavash and sourdough have been really fun to develop. We focus on using clean, natural ingredients that not only make our products look beautiful but also support a healthier lifestyle. Ingredients like turmeric and charcoal add depth and nutrition while creating that marbled effect. We love bringing them to demos, since kids, families, and really everyone are drawn to the colors and curious to learn what’s inside.
And of course, our Gata is really popular (It’s a sweet, flaky pastry common in the Armenian community). We’ve tried a few variations, including some with honey and walnut, and a new one made with pea flower, which we picked for its natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties (this is the same mindset we approached our sourdough with as well). Recently, we also started experimenting with rich, soft cookies inspired by my daughter Lia, and they’ve also become favorites with our customers.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Honestly, it’s going to be a lot of work, but if you stay close to your initial mission, it will be worth every bit of it. There are long days and plenty of trial and error, yet watching people connect with what you create makes it all rewarding. Keep your focus on why you started, because that is what carries you through the tough stretches.
