Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony James.
Hi Anthony James, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m an artist from Anaheim, California. I have been writing songs and rap verses since I was in elementary school, but I was an athlete & very focused on my basketball career was playing around with tracks in college but going into my senior season, I realized that once I was done, I really wanted to pursue music. It was already what I loved to do in my downtime, & I was quick to realize once I was in a real studio setting, with real resources to make a good record, that I had the ability to do so for myself. Since then, I’ve been working, doing everything I can to keep this dream alive for myself.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely is a road less traveled, & that in itself makes it real bumpy. A lot of doubt & ridicule from those who don’t support, know or understand. A lot of work to be put in, sacrifices to be made in your family and social life. There’s always an opportunity cost. On top of that, personal issues that I’ve been through in the past few years outside of music, etc. It’s a lot. But I’ve been fortunate enough to maintain a pretty delusional amount of self-confidence and faith in what waits for me ahead in my line of work, and I’m grateful for that. As well as all the other experiences, you cannot have one without the other, and I know it will only make everything taste sweeter as things move forward for me.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for? What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Absolutely, I’m a singer/songwriter. I create within a lot of different sounds in music, but it all stems from RnB roots, and that is what you could say I specialize in. I’m most proud of where I’m at right now to be honest, my current headspace and the work I’ve put and continue to put in. The body of work that I am, & am becoming. In terms of what sets me apart from others, I’d say a few things. First, my versatility as an artist – I’ve always been a big fan of multiple sounds, & that’s made me a fan of creating within multiple sounds as well while simultaneously making it true to Anthony James. Secondly, my work ethic. I’ve always outworked those around me, simple as that. Third is my devotion to staying authentic, & true to myself. If an opportunity rolls around (and they have) and it does not fit who I am/how I want to represent myself, I’ll say no. It’s not worth it to me, even if it means I have to take the long way around.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Soundcloud has been great for me to release my more personal thoughts, almost like a musical journal.
There’s also a book called “Conversations with God”. I like that book a lot.
