Rising Stars: Meet Annika Maya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Annika Maya.

Annika Maya

Hi Annika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. My grandfather was a DJ so growing up attending his parties/events was inspiring. My uncles were also DJs in the 80s and early 90s. So, you can say I come from a family line of DJs! I learned how to spin four years ago on vinyl which was so exciting and then I started getting booked in Hollywood at very popular night clubs. I promoted/booked nights in LA before I was a DJ so networking comes very easily for me. It was like once I was putting myself out there I started to attract tons of gigs and residencies. I love to bring joy into people’s lives so when the room is full of dancing and singing I know I did my job. The excitement and energy is a feelings I can’t explain, I truly love what I do. I am signed onto an agency now and just collaborated with Versace. I am not only a DJ but a musician as well, I am releasing my first official single and music video in the upcoming weeks.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say it was definitely a struggle in a way because I had to put myself out there constantly by reaching out to promoters calling, texting, you name it! But, a lot of people have helped me along the way by referring me, writing me recommendations, helping me with my online portfolio, a lot of friends seeing the potential and guiding me in the right direction. I don’t think anyone’s journey is smooth, I feel being persistent is key and not giving up even if you feel like it’s overwhelming or tons of work. My friends and family have always been rooting for me and supporting me from day one. I am still on my journey and I am excited where I’ll be next.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am now a signed DJ, so I perform and mix mostly at brand events and clubs in LA and sometimes in the NY area. I live in LA, so anywhere closer to home is more convenient. But I love to travel as well when the opportunity is there. I am more known for mixing Disco beats and it’s my favorite genre to play so it works out for me! I am most proud about not giving up on my dreams and aspirations. When I began DJing, I always wanted to be signed and do celebrity events, and guess what that’s what I’m doing now. My grandfather, who inspired all of this was an immigrant from Mexico and he would always tell me, “Mija, you can do anything you want, just go for it”. His voice and wisdom is always with me.

What matters most to you? Why?
It’s really hard to answer this question because I feel like I have a lot of things that matter to me. One thing for sure is I have a responsibility to build the mood and the vibe of the room. I feel like people think djing is easy but, there’s a lot of factors to consider for example: Who you’re djing for? What kind of energy are they expecting you to bring to the environment? If you can have the entire room dancing for a whole night that is success in my eyes because you’re uniting everyone into a crowd and they’re feeling the same energy at that exact moment. So, what matters to me the most I would say is the crowds excitement and happiness. If I can help you be in the moment, dance, and smile I definitely did my job at the end of the night.
