Rising Stars: Meet Ann Mosley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ann Mosley.

Hi Ann, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was raised in the beauty industry, my mother Doris Mosley is a known hairstylist and educator in Los Angeles for over 40 years. I grew up in the salon answering phones, playing with doll heads, and shampooing family member’s hair. My sister Lillie definitely took after my mother and became a hairstylist, she was the key hairstylist on the 1996 sitcom “The Steve Harvey Show”. I remember she invited me down to the show and I instantly lit up. I enjoyed myself and had so much fun, it was so glamorous and full of life on set. I remember going home and waking up in the middle of the night thinking, I know what I wanted to do, I want to be a makeup artist.

At the time, I knew I wanted to be in the industry, but I didn’t have any desire to do hair. So I called my sister and she mentioned that the lead makeup artist was an Esthetician as well, and she took care of their skin. I then decided to enroll in the Cosmetology Esthetician program. While I was there, I loved doing my classmates makeup and over time the other departments started asking me to do their model’s makeup for their competitions, as well as when clients booked for their skincare and makeup appointments. I never enrolled in makeup school, I became a self-taught makeup artist. I became a licensed esthetician in 1996, and from there I have been perfecting my craft and become the esthetician that I am today.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh my no, it has definitely not been a smooth road. I’ve had a lot of struggles, moving around to different salons/spas trying to settle into a comfortable work zone was hard and difficult to find. I wanted to find a place where I felt it was a good fit. The 2007 financial crisis, where everyone was losing their jobs, people were losing their homes, that in that moment I had to figure out what was more important. I was considered a luxury service, so I had to close my salon and humble myself in order to save my home from foreclosure and provide for my two children. So I went into the corporate world and got a 9 to 5, I was devastated, sad and embarrassed. Staying current, up-to-date, and relevant is a struggle at times. As an Entrepreneur, you will always have struggles but prayers and faith small as a mustard seed keep me grounded for the unforeseen circumstances that I will encounter in the future.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a licensed esthetician, celebrity makeup artist, and educator with over 20 years of experience. I currently specialize in Brow Transformations, Semi-permanent Ombre MicroBlading eyebrows taking your brows from Ordinary to Extraordinary, that lasts up to 2 years. Eyebrows are considered semi-permanent because brows will start to fade. I also have a Brow Academy that teaches students how to perform tattoo brows. What sets me apart from others is that I am well-rounded with knowledge in this industry. Not too many can say that they grew up in the salon from the age of 5, has knowledge of running and managing a salon before the age of 18. Knowledge of front office and back office being a receptionist. To selling a product, cleaning, and learning the ins and outs of my mothers Beauty Expo, Spectrum International Expo (SIBE) over 15 years. With established working with hair manufacturers and the public on that level. I’ve definitely had many hats throughout my career.

How do you think about happiness?
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve created with other Beauty professionals in the beauty industry. I also enjoy and love mentoring women. I mentor women and men in the beauty industry helping and guiding them to achieve their goals and get to where they would like to be. I believe in “Each one, Teach one, Each one, Grab one”. Seeing my clients extremely happy, and the reaction they have is indescribable. After doing a client’s makeup as she looks in the mirror and says, “I’ve never felt so beautiful” or a client that has gone through a windshield in a car accident and had some challenges with their eyebrows, and with tears in her eyes crying saying, “Now I have two eyebrows” is a feeling that will never get old for me. Or even a client looking in the mirror after seeing her brows and crying because they didn’t have hair from their cancer treatments after surviving/ beating cancer. Those are examples of what makes me happy seeing them with so much joy brings tears to my eyes that leads me into doing Brow giveaways during October Breast Cancer Awareness month. If you know someone or would like to submit yourself that would be great. My skill is bigger than mine, I found my passion but I found my purpose along the way.
