Rising Stars: Meet Angela Edwards

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Edwards.

Angela Edwards

Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Originating during the pandemic, my journey into the wine industry began when my sister Monique proposed the idea of launching a wine brand, to which I readily agreed. Throughout the pandemic, we undertook all tasks ourselves, including grape selection, bottling, labeling, marketing, and our website development. Fast forward three years, and we’re on the brink of unveiling The Pour Up Wine Bar. With shared entrepreneurial drive, the pandemic served as the catalyst for us to unite and embark on a venture that deepened our connection.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Navigating the challenges in building our wine brand primarily centered around distribution. Initially, we grappled with the understanding the intricacies if the distribution process and finding our unique selling approach. As a small, black-owned wine brand, establishing visibility posed additional hurdles. However, through perseverance, we overcame these obstacles. Eventually, we secured opportunities to showcase our wines at a festival and parade and secured placement in five establishments, marking significant milestones in our journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my daily 9-to-5 routine, I serve as a Legal Administrative Specialist for the Department of Veteran Affairs. My academic background includes a degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Despite my professional role, I’ve always been drawn to entrepreneurship. While uncertain about the specific direction to pursue, I’ve discovered my true passion lies within the wine industry.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of the fondest memories from my childhood was spent outdoors, immersed in the joy of nature. I also loved traveling as a child; there’s nothing quite like experiencing the wonders of the world at a young age.
