Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Jin.
Hi Andrea, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Shanghai and moved to Vancouver, Canada when I was 10 years old. From then, I watched countless hours of standup, sitcoms and comedy movies. It’s how I learned English, so comedy is very deeply ingrained into the way I think and speak. As a first-generation immigrant, I never thought I would be able to pursue comedy as a career. But one can only wonder for so long until it gets too unbearable. I didn’t want to be an old woman filled with regret, that’s terrifying! I just want to be a normal old woman later down the line. I was hooked after doing my first spot on a show and six years later, I moved to Los Angeles to chase my dreams. I’ve been fortunate enough to do a lot of great things in my career and I am thrilled to keep it going here in America.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been really lucky in my career thanks to a myriad of different reasons. I am eternally grateful, but that isn’t to say I didn’t have any struggles. I’ve definitely faced my share of misogyny, racism and biphobia along the way. I don’t take it personally, because everyone’s going through their own problems and that can be really confusing. Life is just confusing and some of us don’t know how to deal with it. My job is just to be funny, share my experiences and trudge on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a standup comedian, writer and actor. I specialize in comedy. I am known for standup. I’m the most proud of my comedy album “Grandma’s Girl” which won the Juno for Comedy Album of the Year in 2021. What sets me apart is my life experiences and unique voice.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The biggest risk I’ve taken is definitely moving from Canada to the United States to pursue comedy. Moving to a new country is very daunting and scary! I just moved 3 months ago but things have been going really well, so I’m very happy. I just did my late-night standup debut on the Late Late Show with James Corden. It was a nice welcome for sure.
