Today we’d like to introduce you to Alisha Manning.
Hi Alisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
From as far back as I can recall, I’ve possessed a natural inclination towards listening and aiding others. While uncertain of my exact career path, I knew I wanted to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. My journey into social work was largely inspired by my mother, whose tenure in the Social Medicine Department exposed me to the diverse roles of social workers. It felt like the perfect fit. A profession where I could offer support that ranged from therapeutic interventions to advocacy.
After earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Cal State LA in 2010, I went to work as a case manager on Skid Row. This experience shaped me in so many ways. Shortly after starting work on Skid Row, I also returned to school to further my education. In 2014, I earned my Master’s in Social Work from USC.
Over the past decade, my career has been dedicated to providing mental health services to underserved communities. In 2021 I took the leap to establish my own private practice. Today, I balance my commitments as a full-time Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the management of my private practice.
Within my practice, I specialize in individual counseling, with a focus on addressing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, intergenerational trauma, and the complexities of balancing work and family life. It’s a privilege to walk alongside individuals during their most vulnerable moments, guiding them towards healing and resilience.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey of starting a private therapy practice while lacking a background in business management was difficult. In school, they teach you intervention skills and how to work in a community outpatient setting, but being a business owner of your own private practice was not mentioned. For me, the transition from solely focusing on providing therapeutic services to also assuming the role of an entrepreneur was challenging. From managing finances to marketing efforts, each aspect demanded attention and expertise that I hadn’t cultivated during my years of clinical training. Balancing these responsibilities alongside a full-time job often left me feeling stretched thin and overwhelmed.
Despite these challenges, I’ve learn a lot. I am grateful to friends and family that have helped me along the way.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At the heart of my private practice lies a deep commitment to fostering healing and growth in individuals facing life’s challenges. With a decade of experience in mental health services, I specialize in providing compassionate therapy to address perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, intergenerational trauma, and the delicate balance of work and family responsibilities.
I think what sets me apart is my dedication to walking alongside my clients with empathy and authenticity. I believe in the power of creating a genuine connection, a safe space where clients feel truly seen and heard. By integrating evidence-based approaches with a holistic understanding, I empower individuals to embark on their journey towards healing and self-discovery.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
The pandemic prompted me to reevaluate my priorities and really practice gratitude for life’s simple pleasures. Before the pandemic I was constantly on the go. I learned to slow down. I learned a deeper appreciation for human connection and community.
