Rising Stars: Meet Alexis Kemp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Kemp.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My Sister’s Scrub came to mind in September 2018. I desired to have my own business since I was a child, but was not sure of what it would be. Growing up, I absolutely loved skincare and bubble baths, so once body scrubs came to mind, it took off from there. After researching formulas, ingredients, etc. I launched my small business in December of 2018. My Sister’s Scrub is named after my personal sisterhood in which every scrub/product is named after someone close to me or contains a sisterly related name (i.e. sissy, sister, and/or sis). You’ll also notice initials or the sisterly related name on the product label. It has definitely been an exciting journey as a one-woman business where every product is handcrafted. I never stop brainstorming about my business; whether this is marketing strategies, new product ideas, analytics on social media, or how to engage with new customers. Being that I am a full-time Master’s student and educator, running My Sister’s Scrub takes strategic prioritizing, time, and effort.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As every entrepreneur can attest, running a small business is not always easy. Some struggles that I have ran into has been mainly with wholesale manufacturers with the jars/bottles that I use for my body scrubs and body oils. There are several different manufacturer aspects that fall out of my control that can be overwhelming at times. Another struggle is learning the ins and outs of social media to ensure that my products are seen and promoted. Being that social media is up and down with different trends, it is important to stay up to date with what “should be” posted and “how it should be posted” to catch the public eye. Of course, I have also had products that I curated and tested for months that just did not work out. Although these road blocks occur at times, it is still a well worth journey and process.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My Sister’s Scrub is a handcrafted skincare company that specializes in dark spots, acne, eczema, and dry skin. I handcraft body scrubs, facial scrubs, body butter, soap, facial serum, body oil, and more. I am known for the quality and the benefits of all of my products. I am most proud of the individuals’ skin that I have helped. My Sister’s Scrub has helped people, including children, recover from things such as acne while improving symptoms of eczema and psoriasis. My products are known to also provide comfort to Scrub Sisters’ skin who have undergone chemotherapy. My Sister’s Scrub is more than just skincare, it’s definitely a skincare family. With this, I have also been able to motivate younger entrepreneurs to start their own small businesses and have even encouraged other small business owners to keep working towards their dream. It’s room for us all. Also, my customer service is important to me, so I remain authentic always. Shipping to 28 states as well as three countries outside of the United States including Poland, Canada, and Ireland, brings me so much joy. It’s more than just the sale, it’s about the confidence people are developing in wearing their natural skin.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Some important lessons that I have learned due to the COVID-19 Crisis is to keep going and stay consistent. The COVID-19 Crisis is one that was hard for everyone to get through and it took a lot of motivation as a business owner and a college graduate, at the time, to maneuver through. The crisis allowed me to be more in touch with my audience and better understand the highs and lows that come with owning a small business. It was vital for me to stick to the course and stay focused on my overall goal.
