Today we’d like to introduce you to Alba Gamboa.
Alba, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love for photography and creating started in my early twenties. I started going to college and contemplating a creative output to focus on and decided on photography. I fell more in love with it while working in the darkroom and creating based off projects. Over the years, I took classes off and on, but I always made sure to keep my creative eye on while out and about. Whether that was taking photos on my Nikon or on my iPhone (which I do mostly at this time). At the moment I’m still working on taking classes, because there’s always something new to learn. And have also worked with other photographers by assisting them and leaning more hands on.
My own personal work has evolved over the years. I’ve become more selective with what I shoot and don’t shoot. And I also try to shoot my photos to have as little editing as possible. I don’t mind waiting on that decisive moment for the ideal photo when shooting either.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles along the way have come from the hurdles and blocks that life often hits with. But luckily, there has always been a way to work through it and overcome whatever the hurdle may be. I try my best to see it as a momentary pause due in life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in photography but also enjoy other forms of art (a little painting and ink drawing also). With my photography, I enjoy showing different angles and perspectives. I always try to see things a little differently; with a curious eye. Things that inspire me are often nature, architecture, shapes and geometry, the sky, sun light, my surroundings, and really, the world around me. And sometimes, even myself with my self portraits. I also enjoy experimenting, often with creating reflections with my photos.
I would hope that my work would bring about a little curiosity and inspiration to others. And maybe inspire someone to shoot their surroundings also, or see things a little differently with their own photography.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was pretty shy and studious. I grew up in south central LA and I’ve always been a big animal and music lover. In elementary school I took a year of violin and at 14 I volunteered at the LA Music Center Opera for a few years during summer when school was out. I also grew a love for poetry since I had a teacher that introduced poetry and different authors in class, as well as taking me to my first opera and botanical garden. Same opera that made me want to volunteer for the music center.
