Rising Stars: Meet A Murder of One of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to A Murder of One .

A Murder of One

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
A Murder of One is an original Southern California rock band established in 2019. The band formed when long time friends and band mates, Lindsay Parks (Jane Friday / popbandALICE), Berta Arzate (Jane Friday), and Chris Bolm (popbandALICE) joined to create a new rock band, with a new rock sound.

In 2020, the pandemic ushered the band into a lengthy hiatus. The pause resulted in a recalibration of focus and the decision to add a second guitarist. After several attempts to find their fourth member, AMO found Megan Burton. This evolution of the band added depth and context to the previously two dimensional vibe of the band’s original sound. Since achieving their ultimate form, the band has been working on growing a fan base, releasing new music, and expanding their reach by performing across a diverse variety of medias and live venues.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working together has always been relatively smooth. We have good synergy and mutual respect for each other when it comes to writing and performing. The struggle has been more about managing life against the music. Life events, health, family, work, and a global pandemic have proposed obstacles for us but we’ve always made our way back. As of recently, we have picked up momentum and are happy with the trajectory we are on!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
AMO is an alternative rock band which at surface level doesn’t sound very interesting. The genre doesn’t inform that we are also fronted by queer women and influenced by the riot grrrl movement, punk, grunge. We are all from different regions across California and currently based in Gardena, CA. We are proud of our first EP “Grow for It” and fan based we’ve been able to meet this year.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We love the diversity of Los Angeles.. Most of the band moved to LA from smaller conservative cities around CA. For queer musicians Los Angeles offers opportunity and visibility. We comfortably create music and share our lived experiences with fans all over LA. We hope to also be an inspiration to young queer artists who may not yet see themselves on stage.
