Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Hewitt.
Zoe, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
While I work now as a host and freelance writer for multiple outlets, I certainly didn’t start here! I began with some basic jobs in production and wound up moving into product placement. I spent seven years as the Vice President of Television representing brands including Volvo, Corona and Ben & Jerry’s as I integrated them into all of the top television shows.
Concurrently, through a someone-who-knows-someone situation, I was freelancing for “Good Morning America” on their yearly Oscar broadcasts. I covered party red carpets, including the Vanity Fair Oscar Party which is widely regarded as the pinnacle of all Oscar parties, with the job of obtaining sound bites to use in the show. One of my biggest successes with “GMA” was securing the only interview with Kate Winslet the year she won her Oscar. One year, an on-camera “GMA” host made a comment that he thought I could do his job–and that gave me pause.
I started taking classes and honing my skills until I left my job at the product placement agency to pursue my hosting career full time. AMC theatres created a short-term job for me to handle junkets and red carpets for them. I interviewed Chadwick Boseman when he was in “42”, though he’s best known now for his role in the Marvel hit “Black Panther”.
Utilizing my degree in film analysis, I started an online movie review show called Movies from A to Zoe, which was syndicated across four outlets, including Pasadena Weekly. As I continued to earn recognition for my work, I was one of the only reporters invited on-set to interview the entire cast of “Major Crimes” in honor of their 100th Episode.
My background working in product placement, however, has recently opened another door for me as a freelance writer for “Variety”. Building upon my background in product placement when I worked with the various artisans’ crafts, I have developed an expertise in the field. My specialty is writing about these below-the-line crafts, which also helps further my expertise within the entertainment industry itself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing ever seems smooth in the moment, though looking back the challenges begin to blur! One opportunity definitely leads to the next, even if the path has some rocks along the way.
