Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaire.
Zaire, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Hartford, Connecticut, I started singing at a very early age, around three or four, at my Grandfather’s church. All of my uncles are musicians and my father, Stephen “King” Porter, is a well-known bassist in the Tri-state Area so I was heavily exposed to music and performance early on. I started writing songs when I was nine and participated in several performing arts programs throughout elementary and middle school which helped with the development of my natural talents. In high school, I attended Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts where I received formal training. Though I’d been performing for so long, that’s where I started performing professionally. After high school, I pursued higher education at both University Of Hartford and then a very short time at Berklee College of Music.
After moving to Boston, I began to focus more on who I am as a creative. I eventually met, artist and producer, Leo The Kind and we worked together to cultivate a sound for me. I performed at many venues in Boston and surrounding areas however I never really felt like Boston was the scene for me and had always dreamed of living in California. This past January, I finally made the move and immediately met some pretty amazing people in the industry. So far, things are exactly what I’d hoped.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There have definitely been struggles for me, the biggest usually being financially supporting my career but I feel like every artist knows thats struggle so I don’t dwell on it too much. I also tend to struggle with how I want to portray myself of a day to day basis because I feel like as a person I change and grow daily. But, I know that as long as I’m always showing who I am in that moment to the most authentic extent, I’m doing it the right way.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I aim to be known for the type of music that opens a different conversation regardless of genre. I tend to be most proud of my writing and my ability to fit deeper meanings into more palatable nuances. I think that’s what sets me apart.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is peace of mind in every area. I don’t expect for things to be easy, ever. But once something is disrupting my peace, I know I need to check and adjust. It’s the same way with my music but kind of in the opposite way when it comes to creating. If what I create doesn’t bring me a sense of peace during and after creation, then I don’t feel like I’ve done what I was supposed to and I won’t feel as tho I’ve been successful at it until it does.
