Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuta Takamatsu
Hi Yuta, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
At 21, I moved to the United States from Japan to study English.
After completing my studies, I began working at a Japanese restaurant in Los Angeles, immersing myself in the food and beverage industry. Over the course of more than 10 years, I gained extensive experience in front-of-house operations, developing a deep understanding of customer service and business management.
In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I stumbled upon Ubatuba Acai through an online order of an Acai Bowl. I was immediately captivated by its authentic flavor and quality. That very same day, I reached out to Ubatuba Acai to inquire about franchise opportunities.
Initially, I planned to open a location in Honolulu, Hawaii, aiming to serve both locals and tourists. However, the pandemic significantly reduced travel to the islands, forcing me to reconsider. In November 2022, I was approached by the franchisor with an opportunity to acquire the Ubatuba Acai Fullerton location. I decided to take the leap, and since then, I’ve been running and growing the business.
This journey has not only been about managing a successful store but also about creating a space that connects people through a shared love of healthy, delicious food. Today, I am excited to continue expanding Ubatuba Acai’s presence and sharing the authentic flavors that first inspired me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been a smooth road. Coming from over a decade of experience working in Fine Dining, stepping into the Fast Food business with Acai Bowls was a completely new challenge for me. When I acquired the business, my first year was dedicated to learning everything about the Fast Food industry from scratch.
One of the biggest hurdles I faced was rebuilding the team. I quickly realized that the existing team dynamics were not aligned with the direction I wanted to take the business. Ultimately, I had to make the tough decision to part ways with almost all of the original staff. I then hired new employees and implemented a structured training program to build a cohesive and efficient team from the ground up.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ubatuba Acai currently operates 20 locations across Los Angeles and Orange County. The name “Ubatuba Acai” is inspired by the hometown of our founder, Daniela Demetrio, who grew up in the beautiful coastal city of Ubatuba, Brazil.
We pride ourselves on offering the most authentic acai bowls, as our acai is sourced directly from Brazil. This commitment to authenticity has earned us a loyal following among customers who value quality and tradition.
In addition to our focus on flavor and authenticity, Ubatuba Acai is committed to sustainability. All of our materials, including bowls and utensils, are eco-friendly, reflecting our dedication to minimizing our environmental footprint. A portion of our sales is donated to initiatives aimed at improving the marine environment in Ubatuba, Brazil, ensuring that we give back to the community that inspires us.
At Ubatuba Acai, we strive to create a meaningful impact, not just through our delicious offerings, but by championing causes that matter to us and our customers. We want your readers to know that every bowl they enjoy contributes to a healthier planet and supports sustainable practices.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
The most important factor for success in business is not money, connections, or even skills. My advice is simple: perseverance. Believe in your own potential and develop the grit to see things through to the end.
Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, but your ability to stay committed and push forward will define your success. Remember, persistence is what turns dreams into reality.
