Thanks for sharing your story with us Yusuf. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always watched YouTube videos and watched all the success that these young entrepreneurs were having. Whenever I was bored, I would go straight to YouTube to see which daily vlogger or car automotive channel I should watch. I had been watching YouTube videos daily for two years and finally decided that I could do what they’re doing. I was never the most outgoing person, but with the support of my parents I decided to pick up my phone to begin vlogging and see what it’s like to post content on YouTube. At first, I really didn’t know what to post so I decided to record my daily activities with my family and friends. I really enjoyed making those videos, but my channel wasn’t growing as I had hoped for so I needed to find ways to branch out.
Thanks to my dad, ever since I was little I’ve always had a passion for cars. I decided to utilize the cars we have at home and create content with them to not only gain viewership on my channel but also assist those in the car market. My videos now revolve around cars that consist of car reviews, car modifications, or car shows. I am now creating content that I have an actual passion for, which has allowed me to open up more on my channel and talk about something I obsess over. My channel has grown from just my mom, dad, sisters, and Nani watching my videos to people watching from all over the world. By creating content on YouTube, I evolved from being a shy and reserved person to becoming more confident and outgoing.
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road because there have been dry spells on my channel where I hadn’t posted for a month or even longer. I started posting on my YouTube channel the summer of 2016 around the same time I was beginning my college career at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) to study Biomedical Engineering. I’m currently in my last quarter at UCR just about to graduate, and while being in college, it has been hard to create content and balance school and YouTube at the same time. I would always prioritize school first and then YouTube came second. Whenever I have the free time, I pick up my phone and post videos whenever I can.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My business is my YouTube channel, which specializes in the automotive industry. The great thing about this business is the flexibility. I can post whatever I want on my channel, but most of my viewers come to my channel for my car content. My channel “Yusuf Hashim” is a place where I can be myself and post content of what I have a passion for while also sharing this passion with other people. I’m proud to say that my business now has the capability of reaching people from not only Los Angeles, but all over the world. What sets me apart from others is that I’m very relatable with my viewers. I’m just a guy going to college and making YouTube videos along the way, still figuring out what I want to explore in life. The best part about it is that I can take everyone along my journey anywhere I go.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The city of Los Angeles has so much culture, beauty, and hidden gems. Many come here with dreams to call this city their home. Los Angeles is a door full of opportunities waiting to be opened, but it is up to you to decide what you want to do. Many creators move to Los Angeles to jumpstart their career, so I’m grateful to have grown up in this city. What I don’t like about our city is that people come here thinking that everything will be given to them. Some expect that solely being in the city is what brings success, but in order to be successful, you need to hustle and do everything it takes to be who you truly want to be.
