Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuri Sinata.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Indonesia. I grew up in a very traditional Chinese household. A small town where everyone lives by how society desires. Women are meant to be a stay at home mom and obey the rules of their family or husband. There’s not really freedom of speech or choice.
You are pressured to be someone they want you to be. I knew from an early age I was “different” but I was too scared to speak up or try to have an opinion about how wrong it was to me. I got a taste of freedom when I visited LA in Dec 2006, and came back to move here permanently in March 2007. I came with $500, didn’t speak English very well or much at all. I just took whatever the world had to offer and believed that God will provide. I got my first job as a waitress in small restaurant, I met someone who was going to a hair school. It reminded me that I love doing hair for fun and I’m good with it. Just never called it a talent. Back where I grew up, doing hair wasn’t a prestige Job and I remembered I wanted to go to hair school after high school but no one in my family was supportive of that idea, so I dropped it.
I got my education at Paul Mitchell in 2008, Graduate in 2009 and started my career in 2010. It was a small salon in South Pasadena. When I was at school, I was on the design team, Working for a lot of editorials and runways, I thought I wanted to work for Hollywood because thats what LA is all about. But soon, I realized I wasn’t fulfilled. I knew that I was happier to work behind the chair, helping people to look good and feel good. I love my job and quickly build my clientele and open my first salon, with two chairs, at Sola in June 2016. In within six months, we outgrew the space. I expanded and opened Palette Salon Studios in May 2018. We are a full-service salon, one stop beauty. My vision is to have Palette to be a home base for these girls to grow, learn and expands their career to not just work behind the chair but also expanding their entrepreneurial side. Also, for the clients to feel like it’s their safe, fun, second home. I want them to feel pampered and empowered from the inside and out!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. If it’s easy everyone is going to do it right? The service business is never easy. We have to please everyone. Being a salon owner is even harder. You’re not just try to please the clients, but also everyone that works in the salon. Thank God I don’t have the personality to give up on things that I love and I believe in.
Palette Salon Studios – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Palette Salon Studios is a full-service salon that provides Makeup, Bridal services, Hair, nails, lash and Skincare. What makes me proud is that we are all talented in our own way, but we work well in harmony and love. We learn and support each other to grow together. We take pride in our work, we do things with 110% effort. The name Palette is from that inspiration, how in a color palette there’s different colors but we work together and complement each other.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Opening Palette Salon and getting the opportunity to work with other talented, passionate, strong women.
